Borgwallsee

The Borgwallsee is a lake southwest of the city of Stralsund in the district of Vorpommern - Rügen in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern.

It is located in the municipality of Lüssow, the southern shore forms the border to the municipality Steinhagen, the west bank of the municipality Pantelitz. The lake has an approximate length of 3.6 kilometers, a width of 1.8 kilometers and an average depth of 2.4 meters. To the southwest, up to two meters close to powerful flow through bogs and forests, the remaining sides of the river are used for agriculture.

The lake was formed during the Ice Age and is likely Vistula product shallower Ausschürfungen a glacier. Originally, up to 17 meters deep connection with the Pütter lake that was filled with sludge and peat. This is supported by window sampling. To the west, the lake water flows out through a weir regulated by the Barthe. The mill race coming flows through the lake from Krumm Hagen Sea in the south to the north towards Pütter lake.

The lake is part of the nature reserve Borgwallsee and Pütter lake and serves the city of Stralsund as a drinking water reservoir. The existing since 1894 Waterworks Lüssow is located on the northeastern shore. By using the vehicular access to the lake and swimming are not allowed.

On the southern peninsula Borgwallsee lake a refuge from the Slavic period is occupied. From the year 1242 there was a fishing by the monastery Neuenkamp. From the year 1256 the mill ditch was created to supply the nearby city of Stralsund with drinking water and to drive water mills.
