Boris Kuschnir

Boris Kushnir ( born October 28, 1948 in Kiev, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian- Austrian violinist.

Life

Boris Kushnir was born in 1948 in Kiev into a musical family, studied at Moscow State P. I. Tchaikovsky - Conservatory violin with Boris Belenky and chamber music with Valentin Berlinsky ( Borodin Quartet ).

Lasting influence on his artistic development was his encounters with Dmitri Shostakovich and David Oistrakh, who also taught him. His career began in 1969 when he was one of three winners of the Allunionswettbewerb in Leningrad and in the finals under the direction of Yuri Temirkanov, played the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Leningrad Philharmonic.

As a result, he won numerous prizes at international violin and chamber music competitions (Paris, Belgrade, Sion, Trapani, Bratislava, Florence, Trieste, Gorizia, Hamburg, Vercelli). In 1970 he founded the Moscow String Quartet, and was until 1979 the permanent member. As a Jew by birth, he could make 1980 an exit visa from the Soviet Union. A year later, he emigrated to Vienna. Since 1981 he lives in Austria, received Austrian citizenship in 1982, was until 1983 the first concert of the Bruckner Orchester Linz, since 1984 professor at the Vienna Conservatory and since 1999 full professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.
