Borrby ( German Borbi, estonia Swedish Borrbe ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Vormsi ( Vormsi vald ) in Lääne. The place is located in the northern part of the fourth largest Estonian island of Vormsi ( German Worms, Swedish Ormsö ).

Inhabitants and History

Borrby today only four inhabitants ( 31 December 2011) ..

Borrby was first mentioned in 1526 as Borchbue documented. For the year 1565 the name Boorby is occupied. Because of the name, it is speculated that the first settlers from the area around the Finnish town of Porvoo (Swedish Porvoo ) could come.

The site was inhabited until the Second World War, like all the villages Vormsis majority of Estonian Swedes.

Attractions

Earlier in Borrby stood a chapel. Today, parts of the foundations are still preserved.

Half a kilometer southeast of Borrby is the highest point on the island Vormsi the Högbacken. There is the largest erratic boulder of the island, because of its anvil shape Smen ( "blacksmith" ) is called. It has a circumference of 22.6 meters.
