Bragadiru

Bragadiru is a town in Ilfov County in Romania.

Location

Bragadiru is the Wallachian Plain, directly on the southwestern outskirts of Bucharest. The center of the Romanian capital is around 12 km away.

History

Bragadiru is a young settlement, which was first mentioned in 1830. From 1866 it was very much influenced by a brewery. These belonged to the entrepreneur Dumitru Marinescu (1842-1915), who gave the name of the place of the brewery and later even Dumitru Marinescu Bragadiru called. He acquired land in the village and financed the construction of the town hall, a school and a church. From his villa he made the first phone line put Romania to another brewery belonging to him in Bucharest. He ordered the construction of housing for its employees, a cinema and other leisure facilities.

After the Second World War, the brewery and the other properties of the Bragadiru family were nationalized. The town developed into a typical environment for the Bucharest suburb. In December 2005 Bragadiru was officially declared a town.

The brewery went bankrupt after the 1989 revolution. A portion of the expropriated building Bragadiru family was transferred back. The main economic activities are the construction industry, trade and services. It settled in a candy factory and a pharmaceutical company. About 60 % of workers commute daily to Bucharest.

Population

As of the 2002 census lived in Bragadiru 8,165 people, including 8,018 Romanians and 119 Roma.

Traffic

Bragadiru is close to the railway ring leading to Bucharest, but does not have a railway station. The city is connected by bus services to the public transport system of Bucharest.
