Brandenburg state election, 2009

The state elections in Brandenburg 2009 took place simultaneously with the elections to the German Bundestag and the state elections in Schleswig -Holstein on 27 September 2009.

Initial situation

On 19 September 2004, the fourth choice of the Brandenburg state parliament had taken place. The ruling parties of the grand coalition, SPD ( -7.42 percentage points) and the CDU ( -7.12 percentage points) were the losers of the election. PDS ( 4.62 percentage points) and DVU ( 0.80 percentage points) were up and were represented in Parliament. This failed the Greens ( 1.66 percentage points) and the FDP ( 1.47 percentage points) despite vote gains.

Despite the significant losses of the governing parties SPD and CDU both parties a coalition went on again. Matthias Platzeck was able to form his second cabinet.

In total, 443 candidates (113 women under) competed for the 88 seats in the Brandenburg state parliament. The youngest candidate was 19 years old, the oldest 76 years.

The Pirate Party Germany was not admitted to state election. The Free Union did not reach the required 2,000 signatures of support, however, came with a direct candidates for election.

For the first time since 2004 a NPD and DVU in an election against each other. The DVU threw the NPD then a fraction of their so-called Pact Germany before, during the NPD led that this pact was due to expire the end of 2009, " no business basis " would have more. Surveys

The opinion polls said concerning parties SPD and CDU left not require major changes. FDP and the Greens were seen near the five- percent threshold, while for the DVU, which was represented in Parliament by six deputies, as well as the NPD less than five percent of the votes were determined.

Constituencies

In the state elections in 2009 there were a total of 44 constituencies. Compared to the state election 2004, there were no changes in the layout of the constituencies.

Result

Compared to the state election of 2004, the SPD could constituencies Ostprignitz -Ruppin I, Uckermark I, III and Dahme -Spreewald Spree- Neisse I should win, but lost in return constituencies II Potsdam and Cottbus II to the left.

Follow

The SPD was able to either the left ( together 57 of the 88 seats) or the CDU coalition ( together 50 of the 88 seats). Matthias Platzeck proposed to the State Executive Committee of the SPD before 12 October 2009 to lead coalition negotiations with the Left. Here, the Board approved nine votes in favor and five abstentions, the inclusion of coalition negotiations the same evening.
