Brazilian Democratic Movement Party

The Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro, PMDB ( Brazilian Democratic Movement Party of German ) is a social liberal, centrist party in Brazil.

The PMDB has no clearly defined ideology. The party represents partly liberal positions unusual as it contains since 1985 as well as the former leftist guerrilla movement MR -8.

History

The party was founded in 1965 under the name Movimento Democrático Brasileiro. In the period of the military dictatorship, which lasted until 1979, the MDB was the only approved opposition to the ruling party Aliança Renovadora Nacional ( ARENA ). 1979, other parties were then admitted, and the MDS transformed into the PMDB. In 1985 was elected by the electoral college for the president Tancredo Neves from the PMDB. He could not take office because of a fatal disease and the elected Vice, his party colleague José Sarney assumed the official duties. Sarney led the country until 1990.

In the elections to the Chamber of Deputies in 2002 the PMDB achieved 13.4 % of the vote and 74 of 513 seats, so he was the third-strongest force behind Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and Partido da Frente Liberal (PFL ). In the Senate, he was charged with 19 seats and the biggest gains most powerful force on par with the PFL. At the same time, held presidential elections of the PMDB presented with Rita Camata the candidate for the office of Vice President in the election alliance with José Serra of the Social Democrats.
