Bredasdorp

Province

Bredasdorp is a town in the municipality of Cape Agulhas, Overberg District, Western Cape Province in South Africa. The city is located 16 km west of Napier, 74 kilometers southeast of Caledon and 75 kilometers from Swellendam. 2011, it had 15,524 inhabitants. On the way to the southernmost point of Africa, Cape Agulhas to 30 kilometers away, it usually comes through Bredasdorp, whose station is also the southernmost point of the African railway network. The city is the administrative center of the region in which most people live from agriculture.

History

1833 decided the Dutch Reformed Church in Swellendam, to plant a new church to meet the needs of the community members who lived in the southern sectors of the community. The location of the new building church was hotly debated. A group preferred the farm Langfontein, while the other group suggested the farm Klipdrift. Could not find a compromise, and so two new villages developed almost simultaneously, only 16 kilometers from each other, namely Napier and Bredasdorp. Is named the city after Michael van Breda, the first mayor of Cape Town.

Attractions

  • Shipwreck Museum, with flotsam and remains off the coast of accrued ships. It is divided into three parts:
  • Heuningberg Nature Reserve, a 800 hectare nature reserve with many different species of plants, of which 270 are endemic, such as the red Bredasdorp lily ( Cyrtanthus guthrieae )
  • Geelkop Nature Reserve, 450 acres, a private nature reserve. The name Geelkop ( German: " yellow head") refers to the variety of yellow flowering plants such as Leucadendron, the yellow in the spring the hills.
  • De Mond Nature Reserve, near beach wetland, with fynbos vegetation and many species of birds

Events

  • The Foot of Africa Marathon is a marathon run, which is run every October since 1980.
