Brega (al- Buraiqa ) (Arabic مرسا البريقة, DMG Marsa al - Buraiqa ) is the southernmost port city on the Mediterranean. It is located in the area of the Great Sirte in northern Libya and since 2007 belongs to the enlarged Munizip al - Wahat.

Name

The place was known during the Italian occupation as Mersa Brega, Marsa el- Brega and Port Brega, other Arab names are Marsa al - Burayqah or Al Brayqah. During the African campaign, 1941, the City of Erwin Rommel was described as " the gateway to Cyrenaica ." By 2007, the village belonged to Munizip Ajdabiya.

Infrastructure

Brega is located near a bay and consists of several municipal bodies. The newer city was built in precast concrete. The concept comes from the Greek city planner Constantinos A. Doxiadis and architects. In the city there were about 7300 inhabitants in 2010.

Brega has numerous industrial facilities, including oil refinery in the Sirt Oil Company, which was operated from the early 1960s by a joint venture until Esso withdrew from Libya early 1980s. The oil port is operated by the Brega Oil Marketing Company, which is also part of the Libyan National Oil Corporation.

10 km east of Brega, the Bright Star University of Technology is established.

Traffic

To the south is the airport Al Burayqah ( Marsa Brega Airport ), which offers flights to Tripoli. The city receives future connection to the railway line Sirt - Benghazi.

History

During the civil war in Libya in 2011 Brega was repeatedly the scene of fighting between government troops and opposition forces. Thus, the city fell on 30 March 2011 at government troops and was recaptured in August 2011 by rebel forces.
