Brent Reservoir

The Brent Reservoir is a reservoir and is located on the border of the London boroughs of Brent and Barnet. The population of the lake as Welsh Harp is known. The name goes back to a pub which stood near the present lake. The lake currently has a water surface area of approximately 0.5 square kilometers, but it was in the 19th century significantly larger (1.6 km ² in 1853 ). The main tributary is the River Brent.

The dam was built in 1835-1838 by the Regent 's Channel society to the Grand Union Channel at Paddington with water supply. 1841, a disaster as after seven days of rainfall a part of the dam occurred, broke and several people were killed.

The radius of the Brent reservoir was in the second half of the 19th century, a famous leisure area including horse racing at Kingsbury Racecourse. With continuing urbanization parts of the lake were filled in and the area lost its appeal. 1972 was established to protect the Brent reservoir, the Welsh Harp Conservation Group. Today the lake is a haven of bird species, and therefore a popular observation for ornithologists. Most of the Brent reservoir and the surrounding park have been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest ( SSSI ).
