Geography

River course

Origin at Main Hardt- Lach hamlets and top running

The Brettach begins its course to the living room sandstone plateau ( Löwenstein Formation) of Mainhardter forest, not kilometers east-southeast of Mainhardter hamlet hamlet of laughter. Here it arises on the northern edge of the forest Gewanns Lach hamlet pasture northeast of the corridor hill Schnorr hump. This flows around in a western arc and then moves first to the south, where you run the first flows from the expanded forest area between laughter hamlets and Bubenorbis. It is crossed by the K 2670, which connects these two places part of Main Hardt, and then begins einzutiefen. About two kilometers downstream from its source and now about 25 meters below the surrounding hills, it takes in its upper wooded valley the Krätenbach from the left and then flows in the direction further west, now in the Main Hardt Formation ( Upper Colorful marl ), for their type locality of the village Main Hardt was eponymous.

From Krätenbach to Mainhardter Mittelmühle

The slopes are steep now, from blades to run some short streams to, after another two kilometers leads from the right, from the area of the part of local scourge Hardt in the north, with two lakes in the Benz Bach, longest its tributaries in the upper reaches. From here about it flows into the Hassberge Formation ( siliceous sandstone), the crosses are no longer recognizable route of the Upper Germanic - Rhaetian Limes here in the nature of the valley, whose narrow floodplain and its flatter left slope from the village Main Hardt down are now free of forest. You passed the first two small settlements, the Mainhardter front and on a Seitentalmündung from the south, the Central mill. Here reached the platforms of the L 1050 Main Hardt down the valley and then climb up the right slope. The in the valley branching off K 2582 then follows the river further down only up to the county and township border to the Lauke mill, then as K 2345 on up to the middle reaches.

From the Mittelmühle to Geddelsbach

Under the Mittelmühle the Brettach returns to the northwest and pulls through a very straight, V-shaped valley wooded, now in the loamy Steigerwald Formation ( Lower Colorful marl ). The valley road runs right here on the hillside well above the river, because of the narrow valley floor gives her no place. The very symmetrically formed on both sides inlets form a chain of eye-catching Talspinnen, in their sequence, the valley widens slowly in sequence. The first major is on the Mainhardter Lauke mill, where for the first time free corridor covered reason. From this place of settlement until the exit of the valley from the Mainhardter forest parts are slipped off the upper slopes again and again, often down to the floodplain, which after entering the water body in the grave -field formation ( Gipskeuper ) about the influx of stray Bach and Rohrholzbächle formed and widened more and more. Meanwhile on Bretz fields corridor, reached the river in another Talspinne the hamlet Brettach - on the lower reaches there is a village with the same name - which is surrounded by a square kilometer deforestation island that both sides to at least pull up on the middle slopes. In many places covered here orchards the slopes; fruit growing is also further down the valley an important branch of agriculture. On the left slope above the village stands on a spur Maienfels with its castle overlooking the valley that is only accessible via a very steep and narrow Steigensträßchen from below. After a last, the floodplain below fills the forest in which the municipal boundary of Wüstenrot extends to the left bank, the Brettach enters the field of open hallway from Geddelsbach and turns in the area of the village west-northwest; on the right slope here show, the first vineyards.

From Geddelsbach to Scheppach

From Geddelsbach the Brettach flows into close Flussmäandern in their ever -widening floodplain. The right, meanwhile, about 150 m high Brettachhang first cover a large area of vineyards, only at its upper edge and in the hollows of small slope streams you can still see the forest. The left, soon significantly lower slope, however, is initially quite forested. To the hamlet Bretz field Hälden solve right halfway up then more and more orchards and hillside meadows the corridor adjusted from vineyard landscape. A little further down the valley at meadow valley opens out from the left of Bernbach, her longest with about eight kilometers Creek at all. He runs, as well as the two and a half miles further down the valley at the grown in the area villages Bretz field and Adolzfurt also from South Fork flowing stream from many blades on a large forested area between the west and the Eschenau Steinknickle at Neuhütten in the East. Now the Brettach leaves the mountains of Mainhardter forest all behind and enters the Lösshügellandschaft in the run-up. Valley road is now the L 1090th

From Scheppach to Bitzfeld

After Scheppach the Brettach runs without loops on, turns on a northerly course, increases from left to Schwabbach and then flows between the Altort of Bretz box to the right and its great development area to the left through which both avoid the floodplain and are in the range of the lower hill climb. Below the river begins to meander again, and the valley is up to the outskirts of Bitzfeld again quite narrow.

From Bitzfeld to Langenbeutingen

In Bitzfeld the river turns again to the northwest and will soon be spanned by the Brettachtalbrücke the A 6. Here he is now running, swinging between the baffle slopes on both sides, in a very narrow back Meander in Upper Muschelkalk, the catch some usually already set quarries on the right side of the valley. The first and largest is located just across the highway bridge; below Weißlensburg followed by another, whose pit today fills a 3.5 -acre pond. After another double loop of the valley and river, which in this case the hamlet Neudeck touched first settlement site of the municipality Langenbrettach on the shore, the river reaches the top edge of the old village street Langenbeutingen, which lies on the following one and a half kilometers at the hill foot right of Brettach. Their floodplain widens from now permanent, and she go from here to the mouth west-northwest.

Underflow of Langenbeutingen to another city on the Kocher

In Langenbeutingen has the Brettach only a distance of less than 3 km to the north extending boiler, to which she seeks in a very acute angle from now. Therefore, and because between the two initially attracts even the boiler inflow Riedbachstraße, open on the remaining distance to fairly long tributaries from the right, only the Seebächle and Landgraben while to signify their left no shortage immediately after the village. The first is the Tabach, which almost leads to the country ditch. The river now pulls in its wide floodplain in small-scale meanders mostly between embankments there, the valley itself is sometimes loops. In a north-east it passes through the Long Brettnacher village Brettach on the right slope - the same name as the Bretz fields hamlet at the headwaters - and then he steps on the field of city New city on the boiler, where it is equal in the shadow of the m in 33 height the valley crossing Brettachtalbrücke tapering the A 81 from the left of the Clever Sulzbacher Sulzbach. After that flows from left to start a second loop northeast of the valley below the ruins of the helmet Bunder Kirchles of Limbach, whereupon the Brettach enters the settlement area of New City at the stove. In the city reached him just before the built on the mouth pointed spur old town of New City, his last Dahenbach inflow from the left, before he. At the western tip after a run of 42.1 km run at 159.5 m above sea NN from the left opens into the lower reaches of the digester.

Flood protection

Along the Brettach has occurred in recent decades repeatedly to significant flood damage. To curb the threat of flooding, a flood protection concept for the course of Brettach was developed. This protection provides a total of twelve flood retention basins in the valley. Two existing basin at Lindelbach in Bretz field took over the Water Board Neuenstadter Brettach 1988 by the municipality Bretz field, two more above Adolzfurt were built starting in 2004, a fifth ( also above Adolzfurt ) since the summer of 2008 in the construction, a sixth at Eschelbach is from spring be built in 2009.

When flood retention basins A1, which is 600m above Adolzfurt, the impounding starts in the retention area by suitable design of the passage structure only when the Brettach leads than 2.5 cubic meters per second. Decreases the inflow is lower, the restraint room emptied again. Only a so-called 50 -year-old or even worse flood event the entire 22 acres are flooded to designated storage areas. In the flood-free period, the agricultural land can be used in the storage space as before. Caused by flood damage to land and crops in storage areas shall be indemnified by purpose association.

At the spillway of the retention basin itself a überströmbare dam Charte of 200 meters in length is used in the north of the Brettach nearby dam portion. This can then still pay about 138 cubic meters of effluent per second at 1.4 m freeboard in extreme events.

Catchment area of 57.8 km ² Ordinary high water retention area of 427,000 m³ Einstaufläche at HQ50 22 ha Dam crest length 440 m Maximum dam height above valley floor 6.5 m Dam volume of 37,000 m³
