Brian Duffy (astronaut)

Brian Duffy ( born June 20, 1953 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States) is an American former test pilot and astronaut. He is currently Vice- President of the Mission Operations and Support Services for Lockheed Martin Mission Services in Colorado Springs.

Start of career

Duffy graduated in on the Rockland High School in Massachusetts, then he studied mathematics at the U.S. Air Force and graduated with a Bachelor from 1975, his master's degree in systems management he made to the University of Southern California.

From 1975 to 1985, the Air Force was stationed on a variety of bases and flew there, mainly the F- 15th

He has over 5,000 flight hours in 25 different types of aircraft behind.

NASA

In 1985 he was elected to the 11th astronaut group of NASA and trained as a pilot of the Space Shuttle. He has been in the training period completed many layers as connecting speaker ( Capcom ).

STS -45

On his first space mission Duffy flew as a pilot on 24 March 1992 with the Space Shuttle Atlantis into space. The mission carried the first Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science ( ATLAS -1) on two Spacelab pallets in the cargo bay of the shuttle and ended with a landing on 2 April 1992 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

STS -57

On his second space flight Duffy flew from June 21 to July 1 in 1993 as a pilot with the Endeavour. Objective of the mission was to recover the EURECA platform ESA and to make scientific experiments in the Spacelab. Landed was again directly at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

STS -72

The third flight took him back to the Endeavour from 11 - January 20, 1996 into space, this time as commander of the mission. Main points of the work program of the Endeavour crew were capturing the Japanese experiment platform SFU ( Space Flyer Unit, four tons of mass, starting in March 1995), exposing the SPARTAN 206 satellites for two days and the completion of various tests in two extravehicular activities. Furthermore, there was a series of secondary experiments in the payload bay and in the mid-deck of the Space Shuttle. Landed was again directly at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

STS -92

He received his fourth flight again as commander from 11 to 24 October 2000 with the discovery, it was the hundredth launch of a space shuttle. This mission led him first to the International Space Station (ISS), were performed on the various construction work by his crew, so that it the first long-duration crew managed to occupy the station.
