Band History

Kippington Lodge

Nick Lowe (bass, guitar, vocals) and Brinsley Schwarz ( born March 25, 1947 Woodbridge, Suffolk, England; Guitar, piano, vocals) played already during their time at school together in bands. After finishing school, Black formed a new band that called itself from 1967 Kippington Lodge. Besides black belonged Pete Whale (drums ), Dave Cottam (bass) and Barry Landerman (keyboards, vocals) to do so. This band only recorded two singles that were produced by Mark Wirtz, but remained without commercial success.

After some changes Kippington Lodge consisted exclusively of Brinsley Schwarz, Nick Lowe, Bob Andrews ( keyboards, bass, vocals) and Billy Rankin (drums). The next three singles did not bring the hoped-for breakthrough, but could they struggle to survive as a backing band at the Marquee Club.

They began to change their style. Instead of smooth pop they played folk rock with psychedelic influence. In 1969 they called themselves after the founder of the band " Brinsley Schwarz ", while at the same time still appeared as Kippington Lodge.

Brinsley Schwarz

Brinsley Schwarz got a contract with manager Dave Robinson, who was planning a special promotion. You should occur on 3 and 4 April 1970 as the opening act for Van Morrison and Quicksilver Messenger Service at New York's Fillmore East. For this purpose, a plane was brought full of British music journalists to New York. Through a series of unfortunate circumstances ( both the band and the journalists arrived later than planned in New York ) was the appearance of a failure. The little later released debut album, Brinsley Schwarz received mostly negative reviews.

The second album Despite It All came out in late 1970. It was heavily influenced by the band Eggs over Easy, regarded as the pioneer of the pub rock. In 1971, guitarist Ian Gomm to Brinsley Schwarz, and the third album Silver Pistol has been published. In the same year she played at the second Glastonbury Festival, and her play Love Song was released on the album Glastonbury Fayre. In February 1972, they performed with Hawkwind and Man at the Greasy Truckers Party at London's Roundhouse on, listen to a live double album.

Brinsley Schwarz had now a good reputation as a live band. Their fourth album Nervous on the Road (1972 ) received positive reviews. The band went with Paul McCartney on his first tour with the Wings and played with Frankie Miller whose first album Once in a Blue Moon. The fifth album Please Do not Ever Change (1973 ) was less successful.

During this time, had Brinsley Schwarz acclaimed appearances in the TV show The Old Grey Whistle Test and John Peel's radio show. 1974 Dave Edmunds produced the sixth album by the band, The New Favourites of Brinsley Schwarz. They also went with Edmunds on tour and can be heard on his album Subtle as a Flying Mallet.

Brinsley Schwarz also released singles under other names, such as "The Hitters ", "The Knees ", " Limelight " and "The Brinsleys ", but being able to land without the desired hit. 1975, dissolved the band.
