Brix, Manche

Brix ( pronunciation: [ / bʁi :/ ] ) is a commune with 2069 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. The inhabitants also be Brion ( in the plural, otherwise Brion in the singular) called.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the Cotentin Peninsula, about 10 km northwest of Valognes, 10 km north-east of Bricquebec and 13 km south of Cherbourg- Octeville. Neighboring municipalities are:

  • La Glacerie in the north,
  • Le Mesnil -au -Val in the Northeast,
  • Saussemesnil in the east,
  • Saint -Joseph in the southeast,
  • Négreville in the south,
  • Sottevast and Rauville -la- Bigot in the southwest,
  • Breuville and Saint -Martin- le- Gréard in the west and
  • Tollevast in the northwest.

Transport links

Brix is approached from the department Manche operated bus Maneo No. 1 ( Bus Saint-Lô - Carentan - Cherbourg- Octeville - Valognes ). The municipality is crossed by the National Road N13.

Geology

Brix is in the Armorican Massif. In a large quarry armorikanischer Sandstone is mined.

Toponymy

The origin of the name is uncertain. Maybe Brix comes from the Gallic brog, which means forest ( cf. Le Breuil -en- Bessin, Le Breuil -en-Auge and Breuilpont, all in Normandy ). In the 9th century it is mentioned as Brutius what both Brix explained in French as Bruce in English (see figures ).

History

1929 gave Brix (as well as Négreville and Tamer Ville ) to the municipality of Saint -Joseph from that did not exist at that time part of their territory.

Personalities

In Brix was Robert ( or Adam ) de Bruis, a Norman knight who is pulled together with William the Conqueror to England, was born. He was ancestor of the Clan Bruce, who presented two kings in Scotland. The surname Bruce is widely used in England, and even become a first name.
