Bronopol (2 - bromo-2 - nitro- 1,3 - propanediol ) is a chemical compound selected from the group of the diols, the bacteriostat and a disinfectant. It was initially used as a preservative for drugs. Because of its low mammalian toxicity Bronopol has developed into a widely used preservative in shampoos and cosmetics. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) is 0.0025 %, in a concentration of 0.02-0.1 % products is used with it. It is particularly effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Production and representation

Bronopol is obtained by bromination of di ( hydroxymethyl) nitromethane, which is derived from nitromethane.

Instructions for use

Aluminum and substances having a mercapto group (-SH) abate the activity of bronopol.

Security

Bronopol can lead to the formation of nitrosamines.
