Stuart Breitfußbeutelmaus ( Antechinus stuartii )

The Stuart - Breitfußbeutelmaus ( Antechinus stuartii ) is a Beutelsäugerart from the kind of Breitfußbeutelmäuse ( Antechinus ).

Features

The coat of this bag mouse is gray brown on the top, the underside is lighter. These animals can reach a length of 14-25 centimeters, males are 35 grams heavier than females, reaching the 20 grams.

Distribution and habitat

Stuart Breitfußbeutelmäuse live in eastern Australia, in the south-east Queensland and New South Wales. Their habitat are primarily forests.

Way of life

These bags mice are nocturnal and live primarily on the ground, but they can also climb well. They build nests, which are used in the warmer months alone and in the cooler season, together with another bag mice. They feed primarily on insects and other invertebrates, but also hunt small vertebrates.

After the mating season the males die from stress-related defensive weaknesses, as it is found also in the other Breitfuß Bag mice. The females do not have a bag; the boy clinging to the teats.

Threat

The Stuart - Breitfußbeutelmaus is listed by the IUCN as uncritical ( least concern ).

Designation and classification

The Stuart - Breitfußbeutelmaus 1841 was described as a third of all Breitfuß Bag mice. William Sharp Macleay named this way in honor of his friend and colleague, James Stuart, who discovered this Breitfuß bag mouse in South Cove in 1837, while he served as surgeon for a quarantine station.

The types Antechinus agilis, Antechinus Antechinus subtropicus and adustus were summarized earlier with this bag mouse, apply today but as its own.
