Brun Argenté

Brun Argenté (also known under the name Vaccarese ) is a red wine grape that is grown primarily in the French wine region Rhône. It is one of the 13 authorized varieties, which may be used for the assemblage of the Châteauneuf -du -Pape. The Vaccarese is attached there in practice, but only rarely and in small amounts. In 2004, only 0.15 % of the vineyard of the appellation Châteauneuf -du -Pape were planted with Brun Argenté. In addition, they can be part of the wines of the Côtes du Rhône. Their cultivation is recommended in the departments of Vaucluse and Gard. Approved it is for commercial cultivation also in the Ardeche, Drome, Hérault and Pyrénées- Orientales. Between the surveys of 1958 and 1988, the acreage went from 70 acres to 34 acres back. The most important place of production was the community Chusclan. There, the variety is usually blended with the Grenache grape variety known. The varietal developed Brun Argenté wines are fruity, floral and not too high in alcohol and are therefore an excellent complement to the mostly alcohol-rich Grenacheweine.

Brun is also a synonym for the red grape variety grown in Provence Téoulier Noir.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is slightly flattened. She is hairy and greenish only spinnwebig. The also only spinnwebig hairy young leaves are shiny.
  • The dark green, slightly bluish acting leaves are indented thick, five-lobed and deep. The petiole is closed lyre -shaped. The blade is serrated blunt. The teeth are set moderately dilated in comparison of the varieties. The leaf surface (also called lamina ) is vesicular rough, especially in the area of ​​the petiole. In autumn the foliage changes color almost completely red.
  • The drum-shaped bunch is medium and dichtbeerig. The roundish, slightly oval berries are medium in size and of a blue - black color. The berries are not very juicy.

The late sprouting grape ripens about 25 days after Chasselas and thus applies within the group of red grapes as late maturing. Brun Argenté is very sensitive to the fungal diseases downy mildew and gray mold of grapevine.
