Word description

The name Brunkeberg also appears in other parts of Scandinavia and probably contains the word or brant brink with the meaning of " steep". In Stockholm remember streets and squares as Brunkebergsgatan, Brunkebergsterrassen and Brunkebergstorg to the Brunkeberg.

Brunkebergsåsen

The Brunkebergsåsen has the district of Norrmalm through many centuries divided into two parts and the road network had to be adapted to the Os. In an east-west direction, there was hardly compounds or they led up the steep wall. One of the first major roads that were built by the Wall was through the Kungsgatan. It took five years, from 1906 to 1911, to defeat the glacial rubble wall. The main modification was done in connection with the reorganization of central Stockholm in the 1950s and 1960s, the so-called Norrmalmsregleringen. This large parts of the Brunkebergsåsen were demolished in up to 20 meters in height and roads as Sveavägen and Hamngatan could be extended without difficult climbs and thus solved a constant traffic problem.

Brunkebergstunnel

The only tunnel that was driven by the Brunkebergsåsen, is the 231 meter long Brunkebergstunnel for pedestrians and cyclists. It was constructed by engineer Knut Lindmark, he also presented the drawings for the old Katarinahissen.

The tunnel was built during the years 1884-1886. On the west side you had the loose rock frozen with a rented from England freezer at -18 degrees, and you could therefore excavate the tunnel without danger of collapse. On 9 July 1886, the building was inaugurated by King Oscar II. Initially, the passage cost two Öre. The tunnel was carried across renovated in the 1990s after it had been closed for several years.
