Bruno Bischofberger

Bruno Bischofberger ( born 1940 ) is a Swiss art dealer and gallery owner.

Life

Bischofberger 1963 opened his first gallery in Zurich. In 1965 he presented the American Pop Art artist Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Tom Wesselmann. 1968 Bischofberger was given the right of first refusal to Warhol's works until the artist's death in 1987. 1969 Bischofberger was a founding member of Warhol's Interview magazine. In 1970 he produced the Warhol film L'Amour, directed by Paul Morrissey.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s Bischofberger organized Pop Art exhibitions, but showed with Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely and artists of the New Realism. ( Together with his wife Christina, he published in 1982 Tinguely's work catalog Catalogue Raisonné. )

1966 Bischofberger presents the first solo exhibition by Gerhard Richter outside Germany. From the 1970s, Bischofberger focused on the artists of conceptual art and minimalism and showed, among other things, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt and Bruce Nauman. Moreover, he took modern classics such as Paul Klee, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso on in his gallery catalog. From 1970 to 1977, the gallery owner Thomas Ammann worked in Bishop Bergers branches in St. Moritz and Zurich.

From 1979, the Galerie Bruno Bischofberger works by Miquel Barceló, Jean -Michel Basquiat, Mike Bidlo, Francesco Clemente, George Condo Enzo Cucchi, Dokoupil, Peter Halley, David Salle and Julian Schnabel showed predominantly. Since 1982 Bischofberger shows exclusively works by Jean -Michel Basquiat.

The Galerie Bruno Bischofberger published numerous exhibition catalogs and artist monographs and was and is involved in the organization of numerous museum exhibitions and retrospective. To the catalog of the gallery includes work of Finnish designer Aino Aalto and works of HR Giger or Ettore Sottsass. Bishop Bergers gallery is now run by Tobias Mueller, a nephew of the late 1993 Thomas Ammann.

In the film Portrait of Basquiat by Julian Schnabel in 1996, Bruno Bischofberger is played by Dennis Hopper.
