Bruno Liljefors

Bruno Andreas Liljefors ( born May 14, 1860 in Uppsala, † December 18, 1939 in Stockholm) was a Swedish painter who was mainly known for his realistic depictions of animals.

Bruno Liljefors formed from 1879 to 1882 at the Art Academy in Stockholm, after which he traveled to Dusseldorf, Bavaria, Italy and France. 1882/83 he took private lessons at the Düsseldorf animal painter Carl Friedrich Deiker. His friends Anders Zorn (1860-1920) and Carl Larsson (1853-1919) exerted a great influence on his artistic development.

Liljefors described like no other the daily lives of animals with their movement, anatomy and adaptation to nature. This was in contrast to the " idyllic " animal painting this time. Well-known works are the " Fox Family " (1886 ), " Eagle " (1897 ) and the sculpture " Game " (1930 ) at the Olympic Stadium in Stockholm. From him came also the background paintings in the Biological Museum, which was built at the Stockholm Exhibition in 1897 and that you can still visit.

Bruno Liljefors younger brother was the composer Ruben Liljefors ( 1871-1936 ). The studio of Bruno Liljefors in Österbybruk in the community Östhammar is now a museum.
