Bruxelles- Central or Brussel - Centraal is the central underground station of Brussels. With about 75,000 daily passengers embarking, he is the busiest station in Belgium. Only the high speed trains go by and just keep at South Station and North Station ( ICE only ).

Location

The station is located in the east of the city center on the underground here north -south railway connecting the North Station and South Station. The sechsgleisige railway line is cut into three island platforms.

The station building is located between the streets Boulevard de l' Imperatrice / Keizerinlaan, Rue de l' Infante Isabelle / Infante Isabellastraat, Kant Ersteen and Rue de la Putterie / Putterij. As the ground rises towards the east, the west entrance to the station concourse is at ground level, while one needs to rise from the east side coming via a staircase down. The tracks are located two floors below the concourse. It can be reached from the station concourse via a wide staircase to the first basement level, where small shops and waiting rooms are arranged. From there, stairs lead to the three platforms.

Connected to the railway station is the station Gare Centrale / Centraal Station Metro Brussels, which is below the Marché au bois / Houtmarkt and is served by lines 1 and 5.

History

In 1901 it was decided to connect the North and the South Station. Work on the railway line began in 1911, but were soon interrupted. Only after the Second World War, the work was resumed. The plans of the station submitted by Victor Horta, however, died in 1947. The work was completed by Maxime Brunfaut; The opening took place on October 4, 1952 by King Baudouin I.

The station was renovated between 2005 and early 2009.

On 12 April 2006, the internationally sensational murder of Joe Van Holsbeeck occurred in the station.

Lines

The trains use the western (W, tracks 1 and 2), medium (M, tracks 3 and 4) or eastern (O, tracks 5 and 6) track pair of north -south railway. Status: Annual Timetable 2013.
