History

The first station was the terminus of the Borgerhout opened on June 3, 1836 Mechelen- Antwerp line. 1843, the line was extended to the Antwerpen- Dokken s Stapelplaatsen station at the port, where the railway line towards Germany ( Iron Rhine ) began. 1854 a new building replaced the wooden station building, and the Borgerhout station was designated Antwerpen- Oost.

1873, the station was built back to the head station because of increasing traffic to the Netherlands could no longer be performed at ground level through the busy city. In the East, a bypass was built on an embankment.

Today's system from the years 1899 and 1905 received a 186 m long and 66 m wide concourse of steel, designed by the engineer Clement van Bogaert. The height of 43 m into account the exhaust gases of the steam locomotives. The stone station building in eclectic style comes from Louis de la Censerie. He was inspired by the Lucerne Train Station and the Pantheon in Rome. Because of the dominant dome (75 m high) is called the building popularly Spoorwegkathedraal ( = railway cathedral). The station was opened on August 11, 1905 under the name Antwerpen-Centraal. The vacant name the Antwerp- Oost now received a breakpoint on the eastern bypass.

Mid-20th century, the station was structurally in very poor condition. The calcareous Vinalmontstein, from which the dome is erected began to decompose. 1953 solved first stones, even in 1957, a passenger was hit by a falling stone. The demolition of the building was considered in the 1960s. However, the building was a listed building and has been completely refurbished in 1993.

North -South connection

The capacity of the historic head station with ten tracks reached its limits. There were too few tracks and the platforms were too short. Also the head making the trains lowered the capacity.

After the train services with the traffic demand due to capacity problems could not keep up plans for a renovation of the station have been developed. The station was remodeled extensively in the reconstruction, the train operation will be conducted at three levels: Of the ten tracks head upstairs ( level 1 ) remained three to get both sides. New are two underground levels; the first basement ( level -1 ) receives four head tracks, the second basement level four through tracks ( level -2 ). As of May 1998, work on the North-South connection that passes under the city and the train station. The two -tube tunnel is navigable 90 km / h and saves international trains from Brussels to Amsterdam, also the future high-speed trains on the high-speed lines HSL 4 and HSL -Zuid ( high-speed line Schiphol- Antwerp), a head Make in Antwerpen-Centraal. The underground station part was opened on 23 March 2007. The four levels of the station will be connected with 40 elevators and 48 escalators. The impressive reception building was preserved, even in its function.
