Budini

The Budinoi (Greek Βουδίνοι Germanized, also Budiner ) were one of Herodotus mentioned in his historical nomadic herding people with blue eyes and reddish hair color, primarily pursued the hunt. It lived in the vast forest steppes north of the home of the Scythians on the north coast of the Black Sea by the river Tanais ( Don ). Despite their mostly nomadic lifestyle, they built permanent settlements of wood, including the mentioned by Herodotus as their capital Gelonos. When Western neighbors Herodotus calls the Neurer and Thyssageten, while east of the Budinoi lived the Argippaioi.

Interpretation

Which ethnic group belonging to the Budinoi, is ( probably because of the inaccurate information in Herodotus ) the subject of much speculation: Ellis Hovell Minns sees them as ancestors of Permyaks or Votes, Aleksander Brückner for ancient Balts, Zbigniew Gołąb contrast for ancestors of the Slavs. In general, the Encyclopedia of Arts and Sciences is believed that the Budinoi actually Wudinoi or turning ( presumably of slaw woda = water) called (because the beta in classical Greek was also for the sound [ v] ) and the Budinoi therefore also interpreted as proto -Slavic ethnic group.

The archaeologist Boris Schramko will have recognized in the excavations of Bilsk ( Kotelva ) at Poltava Gelonos.
