Buenaventura (Valle del Cauca)

Buenaventura is a port city in the Colombian department of Valle del Cauca. Buenaventura has about 320,000 inhabitants.

The city is located on the Pacific coast on the island Cascajal at the foot of the Andes. The distance to Cali, the capital of the department is 145 km.

Buenaventura was founded on July 14, 1540 by Juan de Ladrilleros on behalf of Pascual de Andagoya 16 km from the city center today and named after Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. Even before 1600, the colonial city was destroyed by the Indians again, but later rebuilt. Only with the opening of the Panama Canal began the development of major port. Today the town is the main Colombian port on the Pacific coast. Of special importance is the export of coffee and other agricultural products such as sugar, wood and shrimp, but also metals such as gold and platinum from the Chocó.
