Bugatti Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is a supercar of Bugatti Automobiles, which was developed under the brand name from the Bugatti automobile company Volkswagen. As Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport he is the fastest road-legal production sports car in the world.

The vehicle combines several superlatives and peculiarities. These include the eponymous 16 cylinders of 640 kg heavy engine (530 kg without gear ), the arrangement of the cylinders in a double V - shape ( not a real W motor), the 110 kg heavy seven-speed double-clutch transmission, the maximum power of 736 kW (1001 hp), the maximum speed of 407 km / h ( so was the Veyron 2005-2007 the fastest production car in the world ), the four turbochargers, the maximum consumption of up to 100 liters per 100 km, the maximum torque of 1250 nm and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.5 seconds. In order to slow down the heavy vehicle safely, carbon-ceramic brake discs are installed to provide the car of 100 km / h bring to a halt in 2.3 seconds for a distance of 31.4 m. At speeds over 240 km / h from a brake pedal time of 0.4 s automatic, like the Mercedes- Benz SLR McLaren, the rear spoiler made steeper, thereby acting as an air brake.

History

Background

After 1998, the Volkswagen Group acquired the trademark former sports car manufacturer Bugatti, 1999, a total of four concept cars were presented to the revival of the brand at various international auto shows. At the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main, among others, the sports car concept Bugatti 18.3 Chiron was introduced, which already looked relatively similar to the Veyron. At the Tokyo Motor Show in the same year, the first study of the Veyron was presented, at the time, however, still under the name " Bugatti Veyron EB 18.4" under the corporate name and equipped with a 18- cylinder engine instead of today's 16-cylinder engine. The decision to series production met the Volkswagen Group in 2001. Roadworthy The first prototype was completed in August 2003. It is up to a few details with the later series variant identical. However, significant technical problems were present for the development to the production stage to solve, so that the production start was postponed repeatedly and delaying until September 2005.

Development

Design / Aerodynamics

The design of the vehicle was established in 1999 by former Volkswagen design chief Hartmut Warkuß in collaboration with the then only 26 -year-old junior designer Jozef Kaban - who later became head of exterior design of Audi and today's Head of Design at Škoda - developed and maintained until the end of series production. The design of the car resulted in problems occurring in the technical implementation: the more rounded shape of the body aerodynamic disadvantages generated because it is not optimal for the planned maximum speed of over 400 km / h. The drag coefficient of the Veyron is relatively high for a sports car and is the normal configuration with 0,393 between that of a VW New Beetle (0.38 ) and a VW Golf I ( 0.41).

In the produced version helps a hydraulically extendable rear wing to stabilize the car at high speeds. This increases drag, which actually more than the planned 736 kW would be needed to achieve the configured speed. This problem was solved by the introduction of the so-called " speed keys": In the normal setting, the car (second ignition key a kind of left of the driver's seat ) reaches 375 km / h, with the speed -Key the car is lowered on the front 65 mm and rear 70 mm ground clearance, making a wedge shape is achieved. The rear spoiler is driven at 2 ° -position to decrease the air resistance, in addition, the front diffuser flaps are closed, in order to further improve the aerodynamics. Thus, the maximum speed at the cost of much poorer handling can be achieved.

In this configuration, the drag coefficient at least 0.36, which is quite high even compared to normal production cars still and an SUV as corresponds to the Subaru Forester drops. However, this drag coefficient is directly related to the required output, which is necessary for a sufficient contact pressure and the need to cool the engine sufficiently to achieve the practical that other super sports cars that get deep into similar velocity ranges, is missing.

Engine and transmission

Another problem was the footprint of the 16-cylinder engine. It was originally planned as a 18- cylinder engine to a crank mechanism with three VR cylinder banks (this arrangement corresponds to a real W motor), but the concept could not be realized. The realization finally took place as a fake W - engine, a V-engine with two VR banks of cylinders (15 -degree cylinder angle and 90-degree V- angle). In addition, the motor is equipped with four turbochargers. It requires ten cooler and has two water circuits (40 l and 15 l ) so as not to overheat at high speeds and in stop-and -go traffic. In addition, will be executed when reaching a certain cooler temperature of the rear spoiler on 2 ° position to achieve extra ventilation in the engine compartment ( in top speed mode takes place this directly ). All these measures lead to a curb weight of nearly two tons instead of the planned 1550 kg, and thus to increased fuel consumption. The engine is manufactured at the engine plant of Volkswagen AG in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony.

The gear presented another challenge The objective of a light, small and durable gear clashed with the desired maximum torque of 1250 Nm. This is the gear to a system developed by Ricardo Double Clutch Transmission.

Tires and Safety

Due to the special requirements with possible speeds of over 400 km / h, tire manufacturer Michelin new high-speed tires developed specifically for the Veyron. The search for a compromise between road capability and resilience took nearly five years of development time. The tires from Michelin Pilot Sport PAX are mainly designed for dry road conditions and due to their width and their profile is limited rain fit.

Also the front of the car had to be revised to meet the high crash and quality standards of the Volkswagen Group. This was also associated with high costs, mainly because the body is mainly composed of carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

Maximum speed

End of April 2005 exceeded the Bugatti Veyron at the Volkswagen test track in Ehra -Lessien under the supervision of TÜV several times the limit of 400 km / h The determined in these tests average top speed of 408.47 km / h, the vehicle's registration document registered in the top speed is 407 km / h Before that time, the Dauer 962 LM from the fastest production sports car in the world. After a measurement of the SSC Ultimate Aero TT on 13 September 2007 by the Guinness Book of Records, at the absolute top speed of 412 km / h was determined, he was temporarily no longer the fastest car street legal. On 26 June 2010, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport achieved with 1200 hp a record speed of 431 km / h On the 100th anniversary of Bugatti came speculation about a special model called Centenaire on, the power increase to 993 kW (1350 hp) and a top speed of 480 km / h was said. These rumors were not confirmed; rather, the Centenaire turned out to be a true specially equipped, but technically unchanged version of the Veyron. However, in early May 2010 Ferdinand Piëch announced during a lecture at the Vienna University of Technology, a more sophisticated version of the Veyron with 883 kW (1200 hp) would in future series. This new variant has set a new speed record with an average of 431.072 km / h, making it again the fastest car street legal. The retail version will have the same technology, but due to the series tires only reach 415 km / ( electronically limited) h.

Series production

In Alsatian Molsheim at Dorlisheim an annual production of about 70 vehicles was provided. Overall, until the summer of 2011, only 300 copies were produced. Then ended the production of the coupe. The waiting time was more than half a year, but anyone who can pay cash, pick up the car at the latest after a month, guaranteed the former Bugatti CEO Thomas Bscher.

The technical problems extended not only the development time, but also increased the cost of development. The unit price was around 1.309 million euros; it was not planned retract profits. According to the former VW CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder Volkswagen wanted to prove to the Bugatti Veyron his " technical expertise ", as well as other auto companies were to do so for far more money in racing.

Successor

The second generation of the Veyron is expected to exceed the technical superlatives of the current generation still, the engine output to 919 kW (1250 hp) should be raised. Furthermore, the torque to be increased. Despite the capacity increase is planned in reducing the fuel consumption to less than 20 liters per 100 km and CO2 emissions of 450 g per km.
