The Federal Highway 46 (abbreviated as BAB 46) - Short form: Highway 46 ( Abbreviation: A 46 ) - operates from the Dutch border at Heinberg up to Bestwig in the Sauerland.

The A 46 is comprised of several sections:

  • Heinberg - Neuss- Dusseldorf -Wuppertal
  • Hagen Iserlohn- Hemer
  • Arnsberg- Bestwig (up Nuttlar under construction)
  • 2.1 Section Federal limit D / NL in Sittard - AS Heinberg
  • 2.2 Section AS Heinberg - AK Wuppertal-Nord
  • Section 2.3 AK Wuppertal Nord - AK Hagen
  • 2.4 Section AK Hagen - Arnsberg- Neheim
  • 2.5 Section Arnsberg- Neheim - AS Bestwig / Nuttlar
  • 2.6 Extension of the A46 east AS Bestwig / Nuttlar

History

The polyline dedicated with effect from 1 January 1975 as Federal Motorway 46 included several sections with different planning and implementation level.

Section Federal limit D / NL north Brunssum - GER - Erkelenz - Wood

By 1972 the section was to motorway similar design under the internal name " Federal Road in 1109 " to the federal limit for Gangelt in planning. In 1973, the construction was provided as a federal highway under the internal name " freeway 205 " for this segment of the connection to the B 221 south Heinberg up to the cross of wood. The west part of subsequent Heinberg - east Gangelt (connection to the B 56) should be carried out only as a two-lane B in 1109, also without continuation towards federal limit. The traffic clearances were made:

  • Heinberg (B 221) - AS GER: 1996 (10,6 km )
  • AS GER - AK Wanlo: 1979 (15,0 km )
  • AK Wanlo - Juechen (AK Wood): 1977 ( 5.9 km )

After the Second Law of 25 August 1980 amending the Law on the strengthening of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1980, Part I, p 1614) the construction of the highway was only until the planned intersection with the A 56 intended when Heinberg and thus no longer up to the connection to the B 221 the route Gangelt - AK south Heinberg remained as a federal highway in 1109 the development plans and the level of urgency I was assigned. The Third Law of 21 April 1986 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways (Federal Law Gazette 1986, Part I, p 557 ) brought significant changes: The section GER - Heinberg (B 221) was only one lane in urgent need set, the second lane contains merely as a further planning. The route Heinberg - Gangelt was intended only as B in 1109 further planning. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, Part of the state boundary D / NL in Sittard is set up according to Heinberg as a two-lane state road for execution. Two sections are already open to traffic:

  • Federal limit D / NL - country road at 410 Selfkantbahn: 2008 (6 km)
  • Provincial road 410 at Selfkantbahn - Gangelt - Vinteln: 2011 (4.2 miles)

Section wood - Juechen - Grevenbroich - Neuss- wood home

In the mid- 1960s was a section of the current A 46 (AD Wood - AS Grevenbroich ) as part of a four-lane bypass route the B1 between Jackerath and Grevenbroich- Hemmerden completed. The under parts of the transport section 1974 were incremented to the Federal Highway. They were referred to internally as " Highway 201 ". On 1 January 1975 the following sections were thus released:

  • Today's AD Wood - AD Juechen: 4 km
  • Juechen AD - AS Grevenbroich: 2 km
  • AS Grevenbroich - Hemmerden: 2 km
  • Hemmerden - AS Neuss-West: 1975 (10,0 km )

Section Neuss- wood home - Neuss-Süd

The track was in 1972 under the internal name " highway 14z " in planning. In road construction report of the year 1975, the portion adjacent to the new name is listed with his designation as " Highway 142 ". Both the development plans of the Second Law of 25 August 1980 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1980, Part I, p 1614), and the Third Law of 21 April 1986 amending the Law on the expansion of federal highways (Federal Law Gazette 1986, part I, p 557 ), the track was in stage II or in the further planning included. To a realization of the recorded in the polygonal path of the new A 46 from 1 January 1975 section it did not. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the route is no longer included.

Section Neuss -Süd - Dusseldorf - versts

The under the internal name " highway 14z " from today's AD Neuss-Süd should be out and open out there after the planning stage 1972 to Suedring (B 326) in Dusseldorf -Bilk. Links to the B 326 in the Dusseldorf area - versts was not initially envisaged .. Therefore, this changed, however, by the determination of the line segment from Neuss Dusseldorf to Wuppertal as part of the new A 46 In the network of 1976 found a such a compound. However, all sections of this section have been completed after 1 January 1975, namely:

  • AK Neuss -Süd - AS Neuss- Uedesheim: 1983 (1.6 miles)
  • AS Neuss- Uedesheim - AS Dusseldorf -Bilk: 1979 (3.5 km)
  • AS Dusseldorf -Bilk - AS Dusseldorf - versts: 1983 (1.4 miles)
  • Area AS Dusseldorf - versts: 1986 (2.1 miles)

Section Dusseldorf - versts - Hilden - Wuppertal- Sonnborn - Wuppertal-Nord

The initially planned between Dusseldorf and Wuppertal- Vohwinkel for relief from Hilden and Haan Federal Highway 326 was completed already on 23 June 1956. Then joined the planning and construction of the B - 326 route between Wuppertal- Vohwinkel and Wuppertal -Nord. In 1972, with the completion of a section is the scale-up of the section of motorway, which was provided with the internal name " Highway 201 ". In 1974, the work on the cross Sonnborner were completed. On 1 January 1975, almost the entire section was opened to traffic. These included the following routes:

  • Dusseldorf - versts - AK Dusseldorf -South, but still dedicated as B326
  • AK Dusseldorf -south - west AK Sonnborn: scale-up of 17.6 km of the B326 to the motorway in 1972
  • AK Sonnborn: 1974 (2 km)
  • Eastern AK Sonnborn - AS Wuppertal- Katernberg: 1972 (2.8 miles)
  • AS Wuppertal- Katernberg - AK Wuppertal -Nord: scale-up of 11.9 km of the B326 to the motorway in 1972

Section Wuppertal -Nord - Gevelsberg - Hagen

By 1974, the four-lane section as B 7 was planned. The route should be parallel to A 1. With effect from 1 January 1975 the section was part of the line segment of the A 46 The Second Law of 25 August 1980 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1980, Part I, pp. 1614) brought the end for this planning. Was provided between the AK Wuppertal-Nord and Gevelsberg continue, however, the construction of a two-lane federal highway in urgency level I. Between Gevelsberg and west Haspe the construction of a four-lane federal highway was included in Level I. In addition, a four-lane connection between the AK Hagen and the A 1 should be built near the AS Hagen- West as a northern bypass around the city. This connection should be continued for four lanes along the B 226 and the Ruhr to the A 43 at Witten- Heven. From the demand plan is not clear what dedication should get this project. The Third Law of 21 April 1986 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways (Federal Law Gazette 1986, Part I, p 557 ) saw just before a two-lane federal highway construction between the AK Wuppertal- Nord and the area west hasp. All other plans were discarded. So finally got none of the projects referred to a realization. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the route Wuppertal - Hagen not included.

Section Hagen - Iserlohn - Neheim- Hüsten - Arnsberg - Meschede - Brilon

The later highway planning in this section was composed of originally separated projects, in particular the " Nordtangente High Limburg - Letmathe - Iserlohn ," the beltway Neheim- Hüsten, the bypass fraction Hausen and the beltway Brilon. As early as 1972, however, there was a consistent overall planning between Hagen and Brilon as highway construction similar to the B 7 and B 7n. With the completion of the section AS Iserlohn- Letmathe - AS Iserlohn- center in 1974, the route was Hagen - Iserlohn incremented total to the highway. On 1 January 1975 the following sections were completed:

  • AK Hagen - AS Iserlohn- Letmathe: 1968 ( approximately 6.5 miles)
  • AS Iserlohn- Letmathe - AS Iserlohn- center: 1974 (7.2 miles)

During the development plans of the Second Law of 25 August 1980 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1980, Part I, p 1614) still all legs between Hagen and Brilon ( B 480 ) of the urgency level were assigned to I, this changed with the Third law of 21 April 1986 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways (Federal Law Gazette 1986, part I, p 557 ). Thus, the route was Hemer - Menden only one lane in urgent need, the second carriageway and the section Menden - contain Arnsberg (A 445 ) as yet another planning. The route Arnsberg - Bestwig- Nuttlar was set four lanes in urgent need. Between Bestwig- Nuttlar and east Brilon ( B 7 ) has only been run as a two-lane state road, but planned as urgent requirement.

It was followed by the traffic shares the following sections:

  • AS Iserlohn- Center - AS Hemer: 1976 (3.9 miles)
  • AS Arnsberg- Neheim - AS Arnsberg- Hüsten: 1987 (2.7 miles)
  • AS -Hüsten Arnsberg - Arnsberg AS - East: 1991 (7.5 miles)
  • AS Arnsberg East - AS Meschede- Freienohl: 2003 (4.2 miles)
  • AS Meschede- Freienohl - AS Meschede- Wennemen: 1999 (4.4 miles)
  • AS Meschede- Wennemen - AS Meschede: 1988 (7.4 miles)
  • AS Meschede - AS Bestwig: 1985 (5.5 miles)

In urgent need of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the following sections are included:

  • AS Hemer - Menden (7.3 miles)
  • Menden - Arnsberg- Neheim ( 11.4 km )
  • Bestwig AS - AS Bestwig / Nuttlar (5,4 km under construction)
  • AS Bestwig / Nuttlar - Brilon (up to B 480a ) as a two-lane B 7 (11,7 km )

Section Brilon - Mars Mountain - Scherfede - Space Willebadessen

Until 1974 there were no plans for a highway or motorway-like connection between Brilon and Scherfede. The network map of the motorways and main roads from 1 January 1976 the Federal Minister for Transport, although still contained no planning between Brilon and Scherfede, however, a single-track planning in the space Mars mountain parallel to B 7 between the space Scherfede and the space Willebadessen was in network card a guide for the a 46 which is also being planned route of the a 5 Bremen - casting included. The First Law of 5 August 1976 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1976, Part I, p 2093 ) contains this route, however, does not. Even during the Second Law of 25 August 1980 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1980, Part I, p 1614), the Third Law of 21 April 1986 amending the Law on the expansion of federal highways (Federal Law Gazette 1986, part I, p 557 ) and the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 is not the route.

Section space Willebadessen - Beverungen - Uslar - Norten -Hardenberg - Herzberg - Former intra- German border at Mackenrode

Until December 31, 1974, this section was under the internal name " Highway 105 " in planning. From 1 January 1975, he was admitted to the polygonal line of the A46. To a realization, however, it did not come. The Second Law of 25 August 1980 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways in the years 1971 to 1985 ( Federal Law Gazette 1980, Part I, p 1614), the line was deleted. It remained with the Third Law of 21 April 1986 amending the Act on the expansion of federal highways (Federal Law Gazette 1986, Part I, p 557 ). The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003, the route is also not included. Today's Federal Highway 38 provides, however, in their route between Göttingen and Nordhausen represents an alternative to the former planning

Current status and further expansion

Section border Federal D / NL in Sittard - AS Heinberg

The originally planned as part of the A46 section between the state boundary in Sittard with connection to the Dutch N 297 and the junction Heinberg (A 46 / B 221 ) is provided only as a two-lane B 56 to build in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003.

A first section of the state boundary to the provincial road 410 ( former Dutch thoroughfare ) was released in late 2008 for traffic. It was followed by a further portion to Gangelt - Vinteln with connection to the county road 13, which was passed on 22 July 2011. The third and last part, from Gangelt - Vinteln and AS Heinberg was commissioned in December 2011 in attack and should be completed by 2017.

The entire route is built with a changing 2 1 traffic management.

Section AS Heinberg - AK Wuppertal-Nord

The already completed road section runs from the AS Heinberg about Mönchengladbach, Neuss, Dusseldorf to Wuppertal AK -Nord.

The original plan, the A 46 from the AS Neuss- wood home (A 46 / B 230 ) south to the Neuss- wood home districts, Weckhoven and Norf to lead the motorway junction Neuss -Süd, was abandoned. Instead took place between the AS Neuss-West and the AK Neuss-Süd, the expansion of A 57, the conversion of AS Neuss-West to a motorway interchange and upgrade of the section between the AS Neuss- wood home and the AD Neuss-West. The section between the AD Neuss-West and the AD Neuss-Süd was expelled by the numbers A 46/57.

Section AK Wuppertal -Nord - AK Hagen

The originally planned gap closure between Wuppertal-Nord and Hagen, which provided a route along the valley of the Ennepe between Schwelm and Hagen and at no point more than three kilometers south of the parallel A 1 was configured, is currently not pursued.

Section AK Hagen - Arnsberg- Neheim

Between AK Hagen and AS Hemer A 46 is completed.

For the section between the AS Hemer (B7 ) to Menden ( B515 ) are the preliminary designs for 7.3 km. The subsequent route of Menden ( B515 ) to Arnsberg- Neheim ( A445 ) with 12.1 kilometers located in the pre-planning.

The continued construction of the A 46 is controversial. Among the opponents include in particular the Transport Club Germany (VCD ) and the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany ( BUND). In addition, a "group initiative against the Highway 46" has formed. The opponents of the space closure point to the need for the highway construction impacts on nature and landscape, to the declining volume of traffic in the region and a resulting change in cost-benefit relation.

In contrast, calls for the regional economy to close the gap and has established a " business initiative Pro A 46". Proponents of Weiterbaues rely on the high load of the existing roads, the verkehrserschließende impact of the project and the elimination of urban harmed by the highway construction.

The state government of North Rhine -Westphalia published on 25 October 2011, a prioritization list for federal highways. It states: " The existing line determination is divided Planning will continue on a part- line Hemer to Menden Parallel to the planning finds a network investigation instead, especially to find the optimum point for integration into the network at Menden [ ... ]. .. the line for Menden to Arnsberg / Neheim is canceled. planning is made quiescent. in the event that in the future the plan is to resume a test of the null variant with investigation of alternative network solutions previously carried out with the participation of MKULNV. "

The news triggered both proponents and opponents of space closure of criticism.

In November 2011, agreed to by an online report of the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, three mayors, two district councils and a vice-chief of the Regional Council on a route alternative for the continuation of the A 46 Accordingly, should the route of Menden - Lendringsen coming to Wimbern run past, pass under the airfield Arnsberg- Echthausen in a tunnel and then turn off south and connect in the amount of the Roost "House Füchten " to the A445.

Beginning in July 2013 it was announced by the Westfälische Rundschau that the current Minister of Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia, Michael Groschek, 46 is planning a round table on closing the gap between the A Hemer and Neheim. The Ministry of Transport has therefore " all parties " invited for September 16 2013 following Dusseldorf. The dispute over the highway project is already four decades old. State Transport Minister Michael Groschek (SPD ) now wants to "finally a sustainable solution " find for the transport project. The country's Transport Minister Michael Groschek (SPD ) even advocated the rapid closing the gap between Hemer and Neheim. In the future routing, however, he had "no priority ".

Four months ago, the Association for the Environment and Conservation took ( BUND) the planned closing the gap in its list of " most polluting and traffic- most pointless road construction projects in Germany " on.

Section Arnsberg- Neheim - AS Bestwig / Nuttlar

The A 46 is already completed between Arnsberg- Neheim and AS Bestwig.

A 46 is already under construction between the AS and the future Bestwig Bestwig AS / Nuttlar. The ground-breaking ceremony at the beginning of the work was done on September 4, 2009. For the new 5.6 km long motorway section and the 2.7 km long feeder route costs in the amount of 137 million euros and a construction period of seven years is estimated. A total of 13 bridges to be built. About 2.5 km of new motorway running on bridge structures. The Viaduct Nuttlar has a wingspan of 656 meters and a height above the valley 115 meters.

From the extension of the A46, the Land Nordrhein-Westfalen promises a powerful connection for the economies of the eastern Ruhr area and the upper Ruhr valley, the greater accessibility of recreational areas in the Sauerland and reduce the burden on cross-town Bestwig. The traffic forecasts for the year 2020 from 22,000 vehicles/24 h on the A 46 and 16,000 vehicles per 24 hours of B 480N from. Mitigation and compensation measures are provided on 80 acres of land consumption of around 51 hectares. At a total of over 1,500 meters, the new route noise barriers to be erected.

Extension of the A 46 east AS Bestwig / Nuttlar

The construction of the two-lane B 7, set n to Brilon Connecting to AS Bestwig / Nuttlar. This compound has also received on the prioritization list NRW planning for requirements plan federal measures of 25 October 2011, the classification "plan priority ".

With the 6.8 km long bypass Bad Wunnenberg and the 7.4 km long bypass Brilon / Alme in the course of the two-lane new construction of the B 480N would create a powerful connection to the higher-level road network at the motorway junction Wünnenberg- hair with access to the A 33 and the A 44 While for the bypass Bad Wünnenberg present the final zoning approval and the construction was started with groundbreaking ceremony on September 12, 2013, the bypass Brilon / Alme is classified in only further needs with particular naturschutzfachlichem planning job in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003.

The City Council Olsberg decided on 5 May 2011 to a resolution for the timely continuation of the A 46 / B 7n to the motorway junction Wünnenberg / hair. With the resolution, the decision makers were asked in the federal and state, in a timely manner to create the prerequisite for the continuous construction of the A 46 / B 7n as a street in the West-/Ostachse to AK Wünnenberg / Haaren (A 44 / A 33 ) is built. The construction of the B 7n Bestwig / Nuttlar - Brilon to access to the motorway A 44 / A 33 is of special importance, according to Resolution Olsberg and the region; only so could the entire southeastern part of the Hochsauerlandkreises be efficient connected to the via local road network. For the regional economy, the initiators of the resolution expected positive effects.

Noise

Since the beginning of the 21st century, some 30 noise control measures have been implemented only to the city of Wuppertal along the A46. The investment costs were approximately 54 million euros. 75 to 80 percent of the planned mitigation measures are completed at the end of 2008 according to the State Street building NRW. This includes conventional noise barriers and concrete enclosures (or galleries) in the amount of Hansastraße and Sternberg. This nearly 600 -meter enclosures overbuild leading in Dusseldorf carriageways. The center strip to open enclosures where they are supported by pillars, the other side is closed. Despite the open to a page design, they are treated as road legally a tunnel. The mitigation measures should be completed in 2012. However, their implementation is delayed, so that only in 2013 is expected to be completed. In addition, in the Dusseldorf area - versts of the mastic asphalt is replaced with porous asphalt.

It was originally planned in the 1960s, the then- B326 (today: A 46 ) in the urban area including the Wuppertal Sonnborner Cross largely einzuhausen. Lack of financial opportunities so was discarded.

Traffic Management

By signaling systems, the so-called traffic -control equipment, and the gantries black spots are defused, the traffic flow harmonized and traffic density are equalized.

The first system of this type was installed in 1984 on the A46 at the Wuppertal stretch. However, the system of signs with tempo guidelines did not work reliably and ten years later was turned off at the instigation of the then state minister of transport Franz-Josef Kniola. The system showed, for example, despite empty highway towards Dusseldorf pace 60. Also a speed of 120 was allowed in fog and poor visibility still.

2002 then the second generation of traffic management system was installed and inaugurated. For now, the system has been realized only in the direction of Hagen. The investment amounted to around 1.2 million euros. Mid-2006 was followed by the commissioning of the system in the direction of travel Dusseldorf. The plant is to capture the current traffic and weather conditions on the highway and influence the behavior of vehicular traffic as a function of the situation. By induction loops in the road surface, which thereby measure the amount of traffic and density as well as the ride speeds, the current traffic is detected. Weather stations at the edge of the motorway route capture in addition the road conditions, the wind and the visibility.

In Wuppertal area were called ramp metering systems, ie traffic lights at entry, taken in June 2005. This investment of around € 270,000 for the three realized driveways was federally funded. The efficiency of these systems is however questioned.

A new generation of line control systems was. , In the form of a gantry end of 2008, before the motorway junction Wuppertal -Nord, as previously taken in Hilden motorway junction in the direction of travel east into operation The investment was around 600,000 euros.
