The wind farm Burbo Bank is an offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay ( Liverpool Bay, Irish Sea ). The site is the mouth of the Mersey approximately 7 km off the coast of Sefton and Wirral ( North West England ). Is operated the park from the Danish energy utility Dong Energy.

The plan is to expand the wind farm by 32 wind turbines of the type Vestas V164 - 8.0, the construction will start in 2016.

Construction

The wind farm consists of 25 wind turbines of the type Siemens SWT -3.6 -107 with a rotor diameter of 107 m and an installed electrical capacity of 3.6 MW, for a total of about 90 MW. The gondolas with the generators lie to 83.5 m above sea level. The 25 turbines are spread over an area of about 10 km ². The bay at this point at low water a depth of 2-8 m. The electric energy is conducted via a submarine cable, which is operated at 33 kV, to a transformer station on land in Wallasey.

Burbo Bank is one of four offshore wind farms in the Liverpool Bay: Further west are North Hoyle and Rhyl Flats with 60 MW with 90 MW capacity. The final, much larger offshore wind farm Gwynt y Môr with 160 plants for 576 MW is under construction since 2012. At the nearby beaches on the quay of the port of Liverpool, also is the onshore wind farm Seaforth Docks.

History

The Burbo Bank Wind Park is part of the " Round I" of the development program for offshore wind farms, the Crown Estate, which began in late 2000.

Construction began in April 2006. Already in July 2007, the first wind turbine produced electricity for the first time. In October 2007, the wind farm was officially opened.
