Background

Burlesque on Carmen was Chaplin's last film for Essanay. The work parodied not only the amendment Prosper Mérimée, but also two large Hollywood productions of the year 1915. Initially, Samuel Goldwyn and Jesse L. Lasky had produced a version of Carmen with opera star Geraldine Farrar in the title role. The film was directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Shortly after the premiere of this film appeared another Carmen production of William Fox with Theda Bara in the title role. Directed by Raoul Walsh here.

When Chaplin left Essanay to continue working with the production company Mutual to Essanay decided to make the present two- Akter a four - Akter. The also occurring in the film supporting actor Leo White was tasked with introducing Ben Turpin as Don Remendado another figure. White staged a built around this character Parallel action and added a leftover footage of Chaplin. This explains why the film has an extremely dramatic torn.

It was only on April 22, 1916 Burlesque on Carmen came to the cinemas. The following month, Chaplin sued the Essanay, to prevent further screenings of the film, as it had nothing to do after the doubling of the length movie with its original work. However, Chaplin had no success with his suit. Today the film is available on DVD in both the long Essanay - version and in Chaplin reconstructed original version.

After this success in court Essanay in 1918 brought another not authorized by Chaplin film out: For Irreconcilable Leo White turned scenes with himself as Chaplin, the film was mixed with remnants of Chaplin's feature-length fragment Life and scenes from Police and Work. After the defeat in Carmen process Chaplin went to this movie not before the court.
