Leo White

Leo White ( born November 10, 1882 in Graudenz, West Prussia, † September 20, 1948 in Glendale, California ) was a German - American actor.

Life

Leo White was born in the West Prussian Graudenz and grew up in England. He began his career as a stage actor, starred in productions of Fred Karno and was also operetta performer. By Daniel Frohman he was finally brought to Hollywood. His first film appearance was Leo White 1911. 1913 he was taken at Essanay contract. 1915 succeeded Essanay to bind Charles Chaplin in itself. Henceforth, Leo White appeared in Chaplin films in roles as elegant gentleman or European nobleman. A complete exception was the role in Chaplin's film The Vagabond. Here White played an old gypsy woman. White has appeared in over 400 films. With the beginning of the sound era, however he only received the smallest supporting roles. His last film appearance in a Chaplin film he had in The Great Dictator.

When Charles Chaplin left Essanay in 1916, Leo White turned as a director for Essanay Chaplin's Burlesque on Carmen to additional scenes, so that the film came in double length after the departure Chaplin in the cinema. Chaplin sued Essanay, but could not enforce its claims. To date, the version of Leo White is the official version of the film. White also turned more scenes that were connected with Chaplin film remains, the result came under the title Irreconcilable with Chaplin in the lead role in 1918 in the cinemas.

He died in 1948 in Glendale, near Los Angeles.
