Daniel Frohman

Daniel Frohman ( born August 22, 1851 in Sandusky, Ohio, † December 26, 1940 in New York) was an American theater director and one of the first film producers.

Life

Frohman was like his brother Charles Frohman first actor and theater director. He led at times the " Madison Square Theatre ", in which he worked with David Belasco, whose first play, " May Blossom" he performed. He organized touring theater company that toured the entire United States, while the origin of performances at the same time ran in New York. From 1885 to 1909 he was head of the " Lyceum Theatre " and his ensemble.

The immense artistic and financial success of the Frohman brothers rested on two pillars: a " star system " in which the increasingly prominent performers were more important than the quantity produced, and exclusive contracts with some emerging, some established British dramatists Arthur Wing Pinero, such as James M. Barrie and Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Frohman went into the film industry when he Adolph Zukor in 1912, and Edwin S. Porter founded the Famous Players Film Company, which was later renamed Paramount. On July 12th of this year, the film "Queen Elizabeth " with Sarah Bernhardt was first performed in the title role in " Lyceum Theatre ". The specially composed background music was played by a large orchestra. The premiere was a great success and worked with the "Breakthrough of the full-length feature film in the U.S.."

Between 1913 and 1917 produced Frohman with Zukor more than seventy films in which occurred the most famous theater actor, who had been promoted by Frohman.
