Burqini

The Burkini (also Burqini or Bodykini ) is a two-piece swimsuit for Muslim women. It is made of spandex, has an integrated headgear and meets the requirements of hijab. The term " Burkini " (or " Bodykini " ) is a portmanteau of burqa ( or body ) and bikini.

History

The opening of the Australian lifeguard system for Muslims and especially Muslim women inspired the Lebanese- Australian designer Aheda Zanetti to design a Sharia-compliant swimwear.

The cut of the Burkini resembles that of a sleep suit with integrated hood, as they carry speed skaters. Except for the feet, hands and the face of the whole body of the wearer is covered. The Burkini is made of 100 % polyester and costs 200-230 Australian dollars. There are now variants of Burkini for runners, judoka and Others

In Egypt, Islamic correct swimsuits came in 2000 under the name of sharia swimsuit and swimming hijab on the market. The Burkini in Turkey under the name Hasema (1993) and known in the U.S. as Splashgear.

The swimming hijab is made of synthetic fibers, thereby not liable wet to the skin and thus prevents the contours of the female body become visible when a woman from the water rises.

Reactions

In the past, swam or bathed devout Muslim women in public swimming facilities ( beach ) either fully clothed or not at all. Due to the rise of an Islamic bourgeoisie ( cf. Re - Islamization ) in Islamic countries it has become easier for strictly religious Muslims, their faith publicly display and dressed in a Hasema / Burkini ( or similar ) to swim or bathe. Even the Burkini is rarely encountered, but there is a demand, because it is more professional ( lifeguard ), sports (Olympics, World Championships ) and school ( swimming lessons ) allows Muslim women participation.

However, the Hasema is also controversial in secular Turkey. The Mayor of Antalya, Cem Burak Özgenç, for example, forbade concerned about the liberal image of the city, a woman with Hasema the entrance to the municipal swimming pool. The Turkish journalist and television presenter Reha Muhtar designated 2005 Hasema in a column of the newspaper Sabah as " bizarre ". In a column in the newspaper Hürriyet Ahmet Hakan was the full-body suits as " stupid, ridiculous and tasteless ," to which he was accused of Mustafa Karaduman, the founder of Tekbir Giyim, Turkey's largest chain of clothing in Islamic style, being a bad Muslim. Some beach operators deny Hasema - makers to access to their beaches to scare off any Western European tourists.

Added to this is the problem that some wearers under the Burkini wear more clothing such as underwear or instead of Burkini similar garments that were not made of spandex, but from cotton. This is the one in indoor swimming pools, a hygiene problem, on the other hand just inexperienced swimmers are at risk, as these clothes soaked with water and very difficult to swim. This leads increasingly in indoor pools to " Burkiniverbot ". For hygienic reasons, the latter applies, however, increasingly, for modern Western fashion swimming like board shorts.

The Burkini judgment of the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig

On September 11, 2013, the Federal Administrative Court ( Federal Administrative Court ) in Leipzig ruled in Burkini ruling that Muslim students can not claim exemption from co-ed swimming lessons regularly if you open to the possibility of this to carry a so-called Burkini.

Numerous German media reported about the ruling, for example, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Welt and Spiegel Online.
