Burry Stander

Burry Stander Willie ( born September 16, 1987 in Port Shepstone, † January 3, 2013 in Shelly Beach ) was a South African professional mountain bikers.

Stander was 2007 African champions in cross country. In 2008 he became vice world champion in cross-country in the U23 category. In the same year he was also South African champion in the elite class. 2009, he made ​​his breakthrough. He was U23 world champion, he won the World Cup race in Champery and was third in the overall World Cup standings. In 2010 he won the bronze medal at the World Championships in both cross-country and marathon. In 2012 he won the World Cup race in Windham and was second in the overall World Cup standings.

In addition, Stander took part in two Olympic Games. In Beijing, he finished 15th in 2008 and 5th place in London in 2012, he was so in each case the most successful African cyclists.

On January 3, 2013 Stander was killed in a training accident. He was hit in his home by a taxi and succumbed to his injuries still at the accident site.
