Buton Rinchen Drub

Buton Rinchen Drup (* 1290, † 1364 ) was the eleventh abbot of the monastery in Shigatse, Shalu. He was one of the outstanding Buddhist scholars of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Life's work

Buton Rinchen Drup founded 1320, the hermitage Shalu Riphug on the mountain behind the monastery, was taught in yoga, specializing in trance states and the creation of internal heat ( Tummo ), one of the Six Yogas of Naropa. Which he led Shalu monastery was a center for Sanskrit translations and Sanskrit manuscripts.

Buton Rinchen Drup cataloged thousands of religious and philosophical writings. He was right on the compilation of the Tibetan canon, namely the Kanjur ( Tib: bka '' gyur ) and the Tanjur ( Tib: bstan ' gyur ) involved and is the author of an important work on the history of Buddhism in India and Tibet ( see main article History of Buton ).

He has also written several works on astronomy and calendar calculations. These in particular the first major written in prose commentary work for Kalachakra astronomy and calendar calculations, which is entitled " textbook on the calculations of the Kalachakra, something that pleased the scholars " ( Tib. dus kyi nyi 'khor lo'i rtsis kyi bstan bcos mKhas rnams pa dga ' bar byed pa) bears. With this work lies before us the first known up to now treatise on astronomy and calendar calculations that does not have the simple form of a practical arithmetic book, but tried on a large scale, to explain the meaning of arithmetic operations to be performed. In this respect, Bu - stons work is groundbreaking for the systematic development of Tibetan Astronomy and the Tibetan calendar calculations.

Literary legacy

The 13th Dalai Lama was a block-print edition of the collected works ( Tib: gsung 'bum ) of Buton Rinchen Drup and his main disciple of Rinchen Namgyel Dratshepa ( Tib: tshad pa rin chen rnam sgra rgyal, 1318-1388 ), in 26 volumes in order. The forms of this edition were made in the years 1917 until 1919.
