C. S. Seshadri

CS Seshadri, Conjeervaram Srirangachari Seshadri, (* February 29, 1932 ) is an Indian mathematician who deals with algebraic geometry and algebraic groups.

Life

Seshadri studied at the University of Madras ( Loyola College) with a bachelor 's degree in 1953 and 1958 at the University of Mumbai (then Bombay ) and the Tata Institute of K. Chandrasekharan doctorate ( Generalized multiplicative meromorphic functions on a Complex Manifold ). From 1953 to 1984 he was at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, where he became Professor in 1965 and 1975 senior professor. 1984 to 1989 he was at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Chennai ( Madras) ( IMSC ) and 1989 to 2010 he was the founding director of the Chennai Mathematical Institute ( CMI).

Initially he worked on moduli spaces of curves. In 1965 he proved with MS Narasimhan one named after two theorem on holomorphic vector bundles on Riemann surfaces. Thereafter, these are stable as if they come from an irreducible unitary projective representation of the fundamental group of the Riemann surface.

In the late 1970s he led standard monomial theory in the representation theory of algebraic groups and geometry of Schubert varieties.

He also served as a visiting professor at the University of Paris ( 1957-1960 ), Harvard University (1974 /75), UCLA, Brandeis University, the University of Bonn and the University of Kyoto. 1975/76 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study.

He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice 1970 ( Quotient spaces modulo reductive algebraic groups and applications to moduli of vector bundles on algebraic curves ).

In 1971 he became a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Royal Society and the National Academy of Sciences. He holds honorary doctorates from the Banaras Hindu University and the University of Hyderabad. He received the Medal of Srinivasa Ramanujan Indian Academy of Sciences and the Science Award of the Third World Academy of Sciences. In 2009 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar he received the Prize for Science and Technology. He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
