Cabo Mondego

The Cabo Mondego is a headland or cape with a lighthouse on the Portuguese Atlantic coast. It is located in the district of Figueira da Foz, west of the city of Coimbra, north of the mouth of the Mondego River. It was declared on 3 October 2007 as a natural monument.

The cape was already included in the list of Global Boundary Stratotype Sections and Points, a visual example of the middle Jurassic. In addition, an application for recognition runs as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In conflict to this effort are the economic interests of Cimpor, the limestone for the production of calcium oxide breaks here. Until the 70s here coal was mined.
