Caetano Veloso

Caetano Veloso ( born August 7, 1942 in Santo Amaro da Purificação, Bahia ) is one of the most influential Brazilian singer, composer and songwriter.

Life

Caetano Emanuel Vianna Telles Veloso was born in Santo Amaro da Purificação in the state of Bahia in the vicinity of Salvador da Bahia. He was the fifth of seven children of José Telles Veloso ( Seu Zezinho ) and Claudionor Vianna Telles Veloso (Dona Cano ). His younger sister Maria Bethânia is also a famous singer.

Spent his youth Veloso in the Brazilian Northeast, whose rich musical heritage of Caribbean, African and North American music is influenced, but also from the deep religious folk beliefs as well as the poverty and the conditions of the weather: long periods of drought make the local states to a poor house.

In the early sixties he followed his sister Maria Bethânia, the first successes celebrated as a singer, to Rio de Janeiro. Along with Gilberto Gil, Tom Zé and other artists revolutionized Veloso the Música Popular Brasileira. The Tropicalia called style combined bossa nova, folk music, American rock music and influences of electronic music avant-garde (especially Karlheinz Stockhausen). The album Tropicália ou panis et Circensis worded manifesto-like musical or lyrical ideas of Tropicalisten.

From 1964 to 1984 there was a military dictatorship in Brazil, the censored many works dedicated musicians such as Chico Buarque and Geraldo Vandré. Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were imprisoned by the military in 1968 and went into exile in London. Only in 1972 could Veloso return to Brazil. Over the past decades Veloso one of the most creative and influential artists of the Música Popular Brasileira has remained.

In 2002 he published with Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil a consideration of the Tropicalia movement.
