CAFE Foundation

The Comparative Aircraft Flight Efficiency Foundation ( short: CAFE Foundation) is an American non-profit society to promote the economy of private aircraft based in Santa Rosa ( California).

To this end, the company performs its own measurements and competitions. For the measurements own measurement devices and software have been developed. The company is supported by NASA, AOPA and the EAA.

Founded in January 1981, the first CAFE was awarded 250 races over 250 miles, with the specified amount of fuel with a maximum transport capacity is evaluated. In 1982, the CAFE 400 race was run for the first time, the distance was 400 miles. The evaluation was made according to the rule x speed flight distance x payload and a corresponding weighting. The race attracted international attention and has a number of so unusual or revolutionary aircraft designs such as the Rutan Catbird spawned. The races were set at the beginning of the 1990 years since the prize money of only 2000 U.S. $ offered no appreciable incentives more.

First time in 1986 the CAFE Triaviathon competition was held, are valued at the maximum speed, rate of climb and stall speed.

2005, together with NASA was a Personal Air Vehicle Centennial Challenge advertised, with a U.S. $ 250,000 prize to for particularly easy to use and efficient private planes.
