Café Kranzler

The Café Kranzler was a famous coffee house in Berlin's district of Mitte and is now in the district of Charlottenburg is a popular attraction with tourists and celebrities.

History

In 1825, the Viennese confectioner Johann Georg Kranzler journeyman opened on the corner of Friedrichstrasse / Unter den Linden 25, a modest pastry shop in a ground floor shop. After the conversion, and the increase of the building in 1834 by August Stiller advanced Kranzler his establishment on the entire earth and the first floor. A special attraction was since 1833 a so-called " ramp", a street terrace, all attempts by the building inspectors about was under the protection of the king, to eliminate them. To put tables on the street, in that time was a novelty. 1911 sold the Kranzler - heiresses house and pastry at the Hotel -Aktiengesellschaft.

By 1933, reported the chief spokesman for the radio - hour Berlin, Alfred Brown, every year on New Year's Eve from the balcony of the house, such as Berlin welcomes the new year.

On 7 May 1944, the house was destroyed 25 Unter den Linden by bombs.

Store in Berlin -Charlottenburg

In 1932 opened in the premises of the former cafes of the West on the Kurfürstendamm 18/19 corner Joachimstalerstraße a branch under the name of the restaurant and pastry shop Kranzler. After the war destruction in 1945, it took over the business in 1951 initially in a low-rise building designed by Paul Schwebes again. After its demolition was built in the years 1957/1958 according to plans by Hanns Dustmann the still existing distinctive two-storey building with sessile rotunda and red and white striped awning. Since its reopening in 1958, the Café was again a Western institution and a landmark of the City West.

In lasting memory of the appearance of the Berlin cabaret legend Wolfgang Neuss in 1983: In the moderated by Wolfgang Menge talk show people Neuss called the former Berlin Mayor and just as President nominated Richard von Weizsäcker "Richie" and talked to him humorously disrespectful in the way of a fun guerrillas.

The Berlin painter Matthias Koeppel immortalized the Kranzler Eck in his triptych centenary celebrations (1987/1988) on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city.

In 2000 joined the historic coffee house. The re-opening under the old name was on 27 December 2000, exclusively in the area of the rotunda new day and cafe, evening bar in the newly built by Helmut Jahn quarters Kranzler Eck. The clothing company Gerry Weber took over the cafe in the rotunda.

Branch in Frankfurt

From the 1950s until the late 1980s, a branch of the Allianz building was operated at the main guard together with the Steigenberger KG. The spaces referred later a steak house. Until the conversion of the building to 2005, the old neon sign of Kranzler was still mounted.
