Caladoc

Caladoc is a red grape variety. It is a new breed of Grenache and Malbec, which is grown in France, especially on the Rhône. She has a dark color and is very rich in tannin. In addition to good red wines are also produced fine and balanced rosé wines.

The variety was bred in 1958 by Paul Truel at the Institute National de la Recherche Agronomique in Montpellier ( short INRA ). Currently is the area under vines in France about 2,449 acres (as of 2007 ) and the trend is still rising. Their cultivation is in the Ardeche, Aude, Aveyron, Corsica, Gers, Gironde, Hérault, Landes, Loire -Atlantique, Lot, Lot- et- Garonne, Maine -et -Loire, Nièvre, Pyrenees Atlantiques, Pyrenees Orientales, Tarn - et- Garonne Var and approved or even recommended. Small plantings are also known in Argentina and Portugal. Smallest stocks were raised in Switzerland (0.06 acres, as of 2009, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG ).

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In the ampelography the habit is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is woolly hairy, greenish with easy weißfarbenem approach. The bright green young leaves are almost glabrous.
  • The medium-sized leaves ( see also the article sheet form) are sinuate -lobed and narrow. The petiole is U-shaped open. The sheet is cut sharply. The leaf surface, also called leaf blade is blistered coarse.
  • The cylindrical to conical grape is sometimes shouldered, large (average 270 gr heavy) and right dichtbeerig. The slightly elongated berries are medium in size ( they weigh an average of 2.3 gr) and of a bluish - violet color.

This variety ripens under comparable conditions 25 - 28 days after Chasselas and is thus regarded as late maturing. The variety is more like Grenache ( the Mutterrebe ) as Malbec and tends to coulure significantly less than the Grenache. Caladoc is a variety of the noble vine (Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphrodite flowers and is thus self- fruiting. When the wine-growing economic drawback is avoided, no return delivered to male plants need to grow.
