Calderone glacier

Calderone glacier in 2007

The Calderone Glacier (Italian Ghiacciaio del Calderone ) is located in the Gran Sasso massif in Abruzzo in Italy. He is below the Corno Grande, the highest peak of the Apennines, on the valley of the Vallone delle Cornacchie.

In 2000, the glacier is divided into two parts, the upper part has no direct connection with the lower more.

After the disappearance of the glacier Corral de Veleta in the Spanish Sierra Nevada he is with the ice fields of Jezerca in Albania one of the southernmost glacier in Europe. With a constant decline in the coming years is expected with the disappearance also of the Calderone glacier.

The following table represents the evolution of the surface and the volume of the glacier in the past

Since the thickness of the ice of the glacier in recent years responds strongly to climatic fluctuations, a reliable value for the volume can not be readily determined.
