Prehistory

Today's Cal Poly Pomona goes back to two roots: the Voorhis School for Boys in San Dimas and the Kellogg Arabian Horse Ranch in Pomona.

The Voorhis School for Boys

The Voorhis School for Boys was founded in 1928 by Charles Brown Voorhis ( born March 13, 1870 † September 16, 1961 ) and his son Jerry Voorhis (born 6 April 1901 † September 11, 1984 ) built in San Dimas. It was a home for orphaned young males with attached school. The home was financed almost entirely by Charles Brown Voorhis, who had come through his work in the auto industry ( General Motors and Nash Motors Corporation ), as well as through stock ownership to wealth.

The impact of the ongoing economic crisis in the 30's ( Great Depression ) - Charles Brown Voorhis had suffered painful losses in its stock ownership - made the maintenance of the Voorhis School increasingly difficult. When Jerry Voorhis, who led the school in 1936 elected to Congress / House of Representatives and was strongly time claimed ( he was a congressman until 1946 ), the Voorhis family, the school in the form of a foundation decided to hand over the State of California.

So it was in 1938 part of the California Polytechnic State University ( Cal Poly SLO) in San Luis Obispo and was named California Polytechnic College, Voorhis Unit, San Dimas. It was offered a two-year training for agricultural cultivation techniques. 1956, this " Voorhis Unit" was merged with the since 1949 also part of the Cal Poly SLO so-called " Kellogg Unit" in Pomona.

The Kellogg Arabian Horse Ranch, Pomona

In 1925, Will Keith Kellogg, extremely wealthy founder and owner of Kellogg Company acquired a 800 acres (approximately 3.2 million m²) large ranch in pomana. In the following years he built up a breeding of purebred Arabian horses, descendants acquired the best bloodlines from England, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Poland. Due to the excellent breeding stock, the ranch was soon known not only in the U.S. but around the world.

Early 30s Kellogg wanted to sell the ranch again, but under the condition that the Arabian breed would be retained. In 1932 he donated the ranch including around 90 extremely valuable horses of the University of California. The foundation was endowed by Kellogg with an additional donation of $ 600,000 to ensure that the Arabian breed will actually carried on by the University. However, the University was more interested in the cash donation, as to ranch and Arabian horses and the property was so badly neglected in the following years that Kellogg strove for a return of the Foundation, which he did not succeed.

When, during the Second World War, the U.S. Armed Forces ( Remount Service ) were looking for a place in the western U.S., where their cavalry units were stationed and trained, sold in 1943, the University of the ranch to the military. End of the Second World War, the last cavalry units of the U.S. Army were disbanded and No funds for the upkeep of the ranch. On April 2, 1948, the Kellogg Arabian Horse Ranch was placed under the U.S. Department of Agriculture ( Department of Agriculture ) by law. But the Ministry were also no money for the upkeep of the ranch available and so it was decided to land, buildings, including still present Arabian breeding stock for sale.

This decision provoked a storm of protest from both WK Kellogg (respectively, founded in 1930 WK Kellogg Foundation), as well as in public. The ranch returned - so was in June 1949 - again by law. California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo showed interest in the ranch, as a suitable training ground for students of agricultural sciences. The Foundation then decided to give the ranch as a foundation to the university and was established in July 1949, the Kellogg Arabian Horse Ranch as California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg Unit, Pomona section of the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo ( Cal Poly SLO).

At the hitherto much -neglected buildings extensive renovations had to be made. This work continued until 1956. In the meantime, the new administrative unit of the California Polytechnic College, Voorhis Unit was supervised San Dimas (which have belonged to Cal Poly, SLO since 1938 / so Voorhis School for Boys) from.

Merger and development to the university

1956 were then " Voorhis Unit" and " Kellogg Unit" merged with the teaching from now on - due to the larger premises - mainly in the " Kellogg Unit", Pomona took place. The two combined units were renamed from then on as an independent college under the name of California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg - Voorhis, Pomona.

1966 this newly created unit was separated from the Cal Poly SLO, independent, and received in 1972 the University status ( bachelor 's and master 's degrees ).
