Callan, County Kilkenny

Callan ( Irish: Callainn ) is a town in County Kilkenny in the mid- south-east of Ireland.

The place

Callan is located in the west of County Kilkenny, near the border with County Tipperary (South Tipperary ), and is equipped with 1771 inhabitants according to Census 2006 one of the few major towns of the county. The city was founded in 1207 by William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke; her name probably derives from the Irish High King Niall Caille.

The town is located 16 km southwest of Kilkenny Town on a bypass of the national road N76 from Kilkenny to the N24 Clonmel and Carrick-on -Suir.

Attractions

In Callan are on the banks of the River Kings River, the ruins of an Augustinian convent from the 15th century, called the Abbey Meadow, and The Moat, one of the best preserved castles of Irish Motte- type to visit.

Gaelic Football

The first game after the recast, binding rules for Gaelic football was held in Callan on February 15, 1885.
