Callistratus of Aphidnae

Kallistratos of Aphidnai (c. 410 BC; † probably 355 BC) was an orator, politician and military commander of the 4th century BC in Athens.

Life

Kallistratos was the son of a Callicrates and came from the Attic demos Aphidnai.

He played an important role in the politics of Athens during the first half of the 4th century BC "While Kallistratos ' unbridled personal passions are caricatured in the sources, is called its handling of political affairs to be very conscientious. Kallistratos of Aphidnai designed the policy of Athens of his time in a special way and thus also influenced the fate of the whole of Greece much so that it is rightly regarded as the true builders of a new economic and foreign policy in the first half of the 4th century BC. Several times was Kallistratos next Timotheos, Chabrias and Iphicrates worked as a commander. 371 BC, he traveled at the head of an embassy to Sparta and spoke there with success for the understanding of Sparta with Athens. His speech on Oropus, the bone of contention between Athens and Thebes, Demosthenes enthusiastic for eloquence. He was a staunch opponent of Thebes, and when his antiböotische policy caused considerable losses to the state, he was charged with, and in spite of his eloquence he could from certain death by voluntary exile to escape Macedonia (361 BC). Without permission from exile returned to Athens, he was probably executed in the year 355 BC.
