Timotheus (general)

Timotheos (* in Athens, † 354 BC) was an Athenian politician and strategist and the son of Conon. He was a pupil and friend of the Athenian orator Isocrates.

378/377 Timotheos was a strategist for the first time. In the resurrection of the Attic confederacy he wore 375/374 BC towards the integration of Kerkyra ( Corfu ), Cephalonia, Zakynthos and Epirus ( Alcetes ).

Due to the allegation by Iphicrates and Callistratus he had Kerkyra inadequately secured, he was 373/372 BC relieved of his duties. Shortly thereafter, he moved back to Persia, supported the rebellious satrap Ariobarzanes and captured 366 BC Samos back.

362 BC he returned to Athens and refused in the Social War, 356 BC, the counterpart Chares his assistance at the Battle of embata because a storm crossed the course of the fleet. Full of Beans tried Chares without him to win the battle and failed miserably. Timotheos was then indicted by Apollodorus in a Eisangelieprozess and sentenced in consequence to a large fine. He fled to Chalcis ( Euboea ), where he died in 354 BC.
