Callitris columellaris is a conifer from the kind of jewelry cypress ( Callitris ) in the family of the cypress family ( Cupressaceae ). It is native to the coast of eastern Australia.

Description

Callitris columellaris grows as an upright evergreen tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 30 meters and diameter at breast height of up to 1.1 meters. The walk upright branches from the trunk. The bark is dark and furrowed.

The dark green, rarely blue-green scale leaves are 1 to 3 millimeters long and are not keeled on the back.

The male cones are available individually or in groups on the branches and are at a length of up to 5 millimeters cylindrically shaped. The solitary on the branches are shaped female cones ovoid to flat - spherical with a diameter of 1.5 to 2.0 centimeters. Each pin includes six thin cone scales and carries several seeds. The seeds are already released shortly after maturity and the pins then fall from the branches. The chestnut seeds are about 4 millimeters in size and have two or three blades on.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Callitris columellaris includes southeastern Queensland and northeastern New South Wales. It extends from Maryborough in the north to the Clarence River in the south.

Callitris columellaris mainly grows on deep sandy soils near the coast.

Use

The wood of Callitris columellaris used. Furthermore, the species is planted as ornamental tree.

The first description was in 1866 as Callitris columellaris by Ferdinand von Mueller in Fragmenta Phytographiæ Australiae, Volume 5, page 198 Some authors see Callitris Callitris intratropica and glaucophylla as subspecies or varieties of Callitris columellaris to.

Threats and conservation

Callitris columellaris is classified as " not at risk " in the IUCN Red List. It is noted, however, that a re-examination of risk is necessary.
