The Shining Mormons tulip ( Calochortus splendens) is a species of the genus Mormons tulip ( Calochortus ) in the lily family ( Liliaceae ).

Features

The Shining Mormons tulip is a autumn to spring green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height of 20 to 60 centimeters. This Geophyt forms onions as outlasting and a rhizome.

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and threefold. The outer bracts are deep purple and often spotted purple, the inner are 30 to 50 millimeters long, lavandelfarben to deep purple and have a purple blotch at the base. The nectar gland is square and hairy.

The flowering time is in August, partly it starts in July.

Occurrence

The Shining Mormons tulip comes in South and West in California and Northwest Mexico in pine woods and thickets at altitudes of 2800 meters before.
