Caluco

Caluco is a municipality in El Salvador in the department of Sonsonate. It is located in the center of the department.

Name

There are various attempts at interpretation of originating from the Nawat place name Calhuco: A statement is "place of the hostel " from Nahuatl calcuai ( tl ) "roof" and the locative co, another "place of crows " from cacalo ( tl ) " Crow " and the locative co.

History

The old Caluco was founded by the Pipil. At about 1200, the area came under the rule of Cuzcatlán.

The former rule of Cuzcatlán was conquered by the Spanish in 1528 final. Caluco now belonged to Alcaldía Mayor de Sonsonate. Staple crop was cocoa. Dominican monks built in Caluco a Peter Church, which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1773.

1824 Caluco came to the Department of Sonsonate. By 1890 it had 790 inhabitants.

Attractions

Other attractions include the ruins of the colonial Calucos Peter's Church and a warm source ( Balneario de Agua Caliente ). Every year there is the feast of Saint Peter Apostle for from 27 to 30 June.

Pipil culture today

Caluco is one of the few places where there are still some speakers of Pipil language Nawat, which was brought as a result of harsh repression since the genocide of the Pipil 1932 to the brink of extinction. In everyday life, but it is hardly to be heard because it is only spoken by a few old people.
