Calvados Chain

The Calvados Islands are an archipelago in the Salomonensee. Politically they belong to the Milne Bay Province in the southeast area of Papua New Guinea. You are inside the lagoon of Vanatinai barrier reef.

Geography

Generally

The island group is part of Louisiade archipelago. The group extends from Pana Vara Vara in the west to the east Hemenahei over a distance of 87 km as the crow. The easternmost island Hemenahei is separated from the island of Pana Tinani and this small offshore island Nigao no longer island chain calculated only by the at the narrowest point only 890 meters wide Magamaga passage.

The islands rise up to 302 meters ( Motorina ) steeply from the sea and are either forested or overgrown with grass. Many islands are surrounded by their own reefs and small lagoons. Apart from the high islands, there are also numerous shallow coral islands and reefs.

Nine of the islands are inhabited, with a total of 1,902 residents of the state of the 2000 census. Language is Misima - Paneati.

Management

The entire island group is part of Samarai - Murua District Milne Bay Province. The two easternmost islands, Pana Wina and Hemenahei belong to Yaleyemba Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area, all other islands west of it to Louisiade Rural LLG.
