Camera Obscura (Band)

Camera Obscura is a Scottish indie band.

Band History

In 1996, singer and songwriter Tracy Anne Campbell, drummer and singer John Henderson, bassist Gavin Dunbar, and guitarist David Skirving in Glasgow founded the band Camera Obscura. In the early years they recorded several singles and the group grew to six members. Known to a wider public, they were, as a 2001 BBC radio presenter John Peel was aware of them. The following year they released their debut album, Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi. In those early years they were supported by artists from the same time founded in Glasgow band Belle and Sebastian. The second album Underachievers Please Try Harder followed in 2003. Was published not only in their homeland, but also in the United States.

For the Peel sessions, the musicians set to music in 2004 two poems of the Scottish national poet Robert Burns, and as her sponsor John Peel died the same year, they dedicated him the single release of I Love My Jean. In the meantime, Camera Obscura were successfully gone on tour around the world. Their next album they produced in Sweden with producer Jari Haapalainen, but without the second singer John Henderson, who had previously left the band. Thus, the vocals of Tracy Anne Campbell moved alone to the fore. Let's Get Out of This Country was released internationally in 2006 and earned them a first moderate success in the U.S. independent charts.

The following years brought further changes, then trumpeter Nigel Baillie retired as a permanent member, although he still occasionally appears with the band. They also changed the label. The real breakthrough came in the Scots in 2009 with the album My Maudlin Career. So they made it for the first time in the official album charts in both the UK and in the USA. After that, the band took a break due to health and personal problems of its members. By 2013 they had but again completed a new album, which was recorded with producer Tucker Martine, this time in the United States. Desire Lines was able to build on the chart success of its predecessor.
