Canaima National Park

The Canaima National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Canaima ) is located in the Gran Sabana, located in Bolivar State in southeastern Venezuela. To the south it borders Brazil and Guyana.

On 12 June 1962, the National Park was established. He then covered an area of ​​10,000 km ². In 1975, the park was expanded to a total area of 30,000 km ², making it one of the largest national parks in the world. By UNESCO in 1994 he was declared a World Heritage Site.

The area of ​​the Gran Sabana, in the highlands of Guiana, is a rugged valleys of the highlands. Characteristic of the National Park are powerful mesas of sandstone, which are called tepuis. On their plateaus is a unique animal and plant life has developed. Due to the climatic isolation of the high plateaus of tropical rainforest, evolution has brought forth a large portion of endemic species in isolation over millions of years. Some of the highest waterfalls in the world, such as the Angel Falls, Salto Sapo Kukenam and the overthrow of the mesas in depth. They are a special attraction for tourism.
