Cañar Province

The Cañar Province (Spanish: Provincia del Cañar ) is a province in Ecuador. It is located in the Andes and has an area of ​​3908 km ² approximately 215,000 inhabitants (2003 ). The province's name goes back to the people of the Canary. Its capital is Azogues, another important city is Cañar. In the province are the famous ruins of Ingapirca Inca fortress and place of worship.

Location

The Cañar province is located in the south center of Ecuador and is bordered to the north by the province of Chimborazo, on the east by the province of Morona Santiago, on the south by the province of Azuay, and on the west by the province of Guayas.

Policy

The directly elected Prefect of Cañar called Diego Ormaza. He belongs to the left Movimiento Popular Democrático (MPD ). Mayor of the capital Azogues is Víctor Hugo Molina, also from the MPD.

History

The Cañar province was established as a province Azogues during the presidency of Ignacio de Veintemilla to submission of Canton Azogues by decision of the Ecuadorian Congress on 17 November 1880. It originally included the previously belonging to Azuay and Cañar Azogues cantons and the parish Delek.

Attractions

In addition to the mountain region (including parts of the Sangay National Park ) and numerous lakes, the ruins of Ingapirca are the main attraction of the province. At the same time, the complex of Ingapirca is the most important pre-Columbian archaeological site in Ecuador. According to current interpretation of the complex includes among others a sun temple, an observatory for observation of the sun and moon, storage rooms, ritual baths, tombs, streets and squares. The name " Ingapirca " comes from the Quechua and means " Wall of the Inca ".
